This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Not Too Shabby - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

So far, so good. This is a great a car for 2 people. Its quick and stylish. Ive never had a car that got me so many compliments. The back seat is a joke however. Its embarassing to have to give anyone a ride. You can actually drive and reach anything in the back-seat without a problem. The sunroof is a little trick to operate at first.

  • This cars for "Drivers". - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

We bought the car on the 6th of June and took a trip of 2700 miles, returning on the 16th. We drove Interstates 15 and 80, and Hiways 4, 16, 49, 50, 89 from Provo, UT to Murphys, CA; to Sacramento to Sierra City, to Truckee, up to South Lake Tahoe, back to Utah. We got over 500 miles per tank(12 gals. used each fillup); even doing 80 mph with the AC on, loaded with luggage for two and camping gear! Freeways in UT & NEV are 75 mph. On curvy hiways 4, 49, 50, & 89 the car handled like a Ferrari - really fun to drive. The only flaw with this vehicle is the sun visors! Theyre too short! Otherwise, this car is near perfect for around town driving and long trips.

  • WOULD NOT WISH THIS CAR ON MY WORST ENEMY! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this car 5 years ago after I graduated high school to have a more reliable car for driving back and forth to college. I have literally had this car in the shop for something new needing to be fixed every single month. I had a 96 mustang before this and it had about 50,000 more miles on it and I never ONCE had it in the shop for anything but oil changes. Not to mention, everything is TWICE as expensive to fix because its a foreign car This car has been my worst nightmare and I just got done paying on it. Now the transmission is about to go and now I am forced to buy another car instead of having the luxury of no car payment. If you want something to last, please do NOT buy this car!

  • Still a Good Car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have owned my Jetta Wagon for 8 years now and have 115k miles on it. This has been a good car. I tend to drive cars into the ground and have completed this mission with several Toyotas... so I know good cars. I have had a few problems with the plastic handles on the glove box and arm rest. They have been replaced. The door seal tends to freeze the door shut when left over night in very cold weather. Other than these small problems this has been a carefree car. I know two other people that own this same wagon and they have had the same luck with their cars that I have with mine. Consumer Reports did a very poor job of reviewing this car. I would recommend this car.

  • My car is a recall beast. - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had my Jetta for 6 months and have been to the shop 3 times. Passenger seat frame broke, window fell into door, gas tank door wouldnt shut, leaks whenever left outside in rain, break light malfunction, and now the stereo wont turn on. Thank God this was all under warranty for me, so buyer beware. The car drives well enough for what I do, but big puddles and slippery roads are very scary with my Jetta. But other than that long list of recalls my car is fine.

  • VW TDI is a good choice - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The TDI is a great option for those looking for some fun, fuel economy, interior comfort, and style. The diesel is a little different than the gas engine and might take getting used to but the turbo diesel pick up makes a difference. This car is hard to keep under 70 on the highway. The front plastic piece is TOO close to the ground and often scrapes when pulling out of parking lots.

  • 2002 VW Jetta GLX VR6 - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

The reviews on maintenance costs are spot on. In six years, Ive reached double digits in calling a tow truck to come pick me up. x5 alternators, x4 window regulators (3 driver/1 passenger), cat converter, multiple hoses/wires seemed to have disintegrated or melted without known reasons, interior wood paneling is falling off (even double bubble wont keep them on and I used that fixing air planes). Also my black paint job began to fade shortly after the factory 10 year warranty. Now my black car mirrors a dalmatian, which I have begun to explain as it is a "custom fade" paint job. 700 words isnt enough to explain how many problems Ive had since 2009.

  • a hard-to-beat combo - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

this car, despite a 115-hp base engine, is a lot of fun to drive. it is comfortable, roomy, as safe as anything in its class. sleek styling. fuel economy is consistently 24-26 mpg, even in the city. ride is smooth; handling is great. the car does not accelerate quickly through lower gears, unless pushed, but once in third moves fast. cruises well at high speeds. the 2.0 base engine is said to be more reliable than the turbo, and with a stick its still fun to drive. leather interior and sunroof give this car the feel of others costing more; it compares favorably to the volvo v40. overall, its a sleek, safe, reliable, well priced, fun to drive car.

  • No test drive needed - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I dont know how they can improve on this car wagon rocket...The 1.8L turbo puts it in a class by itself...The tiptronic automatic gives the feeling of zoom when there is nobody around...Mine is kept outdoors and the reflex silver hides the dust real well...No rattles, the interior reeks of quality not found in $20k cars...Ill keep it forever...God loves you,Volkswagen...
