This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

  • Great Economy car - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

My Volkswagen Jetta GL TDI is very low maintenace and cheap to own. It gets great fuel milage. It is one of the best alternatives to Hybred Engine power! It has penty of power for long high speed driving. It can do 80 - 90 mph up hills. Plus, I can make a round trip to LA - Vegas on one tank of fuel!

Driving this car on a 789 mile weekend trip was a great experiance that I cant fully explain. It has to be driven to understand what I mean. The 789 miles had many steep hills to go up, I set the cruise control at 70 mph and never once did the transmissions shift down going up the hills. I have a V6 and I know that it would have shifted down on many of the hills. With the firm heated seats my back felt better than it had in weeks after the trip. It has many standard features that cant be found in other cars of its size. PS. The speed limit here is 110kmph

Fun drive, classy interior, best crash ratings possible (very safe), awesome sound system. Very fast car for a 4 door car.

  • The Jetta - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I love this little car. I drive over 65 miles one way to work and the gas mileage has been awesome. I think the car is really classy. This is the first time I have ever owned a VW and I would buy another.

  • Cool Car-Mechanically unreliable - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Driving the Jetta was fun, but I found that it was the mechanical issues that bugged me. I bought this car with 36k miles on it. I had no problems for 5k-10k miles then everything went. I had to replace the sway bars, because they rusted, I had to get new front brakes and that cost $615 bucks =0( It also wont start when its 0 degrees or lower. I took it in 4 times and the dealership had no idea what was wrong. My battery was checked and was fine, everything was fine they told me. But it wasnt. I jumped ship and got a Scion TC. I love it and it starts in frigid temps. I loved this car, but hated the fact that it was mechanically garbage!

  • VW not very customer oriented - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Overall, my vehicle is excellent. Good engine, great fuel economy (~46 mpg), well-designed. However, on three separate occasions, my window fell into the door and would not go up. This was covered under warranty, but nevertheless, was inconvenient. I called VW customer care to complain, feeling that they owed me an explanation and some special compensation. They were not willing to give me even a cupholder, despite my inconvenience. Buyers beware! VW doesnt stand behind their product!

  • 1.8T is the poor mans Audi A4 - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I really enjoy my new Jetta 1.8T GL. The tiptronic makes city driving a lot more exciting; but has no real use for highway driving. The brakes are a little splashy, but maybe Ive been driving too fast and have been using them too much. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the quality and appearance of this car. It has all the looks and features of an Audi A4, without the $35k price tag. I would buy a Jetta again.

  • Stressless - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had my 2003 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg for a little over two years, and have enjoyed every minute Ive spent in this car. It gets awesome gas milage in city and highway driving, speed, preformance, its all there. My cars reliability came into question when I discovered 35% of the parts for my car were assembled in Mexico and ~25% in the U.S. But, Im happy to say that nothing other than the breaks, a burned out tape deck (lovin the Monsoon stereo too much) and the occational oil change have put me back at the dealer.

  • Too many problems to mention - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The car is really fun to drive and looks great, but build quality is terrible. The A/C went out the first week I bought the car and still doesnt cool properly. Heater smells like its burning something. Door locks rattle (only when locked). Power windows "pinch protection" makes the window reverse and go down when you try and roll it up (and nothing is is the way). Engine cuts out when started cold. Floor mat retentions broke off. Center console latch broke off. If you rub the plastic inside it will rub off too.

  • Fun, Fun, fun..... - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

First off I would like to say that the 200hp SIX speed manual is AWESOME! I have never owned a car that I just want to jump into and drive like I do this car. The look of the car, the quick acceleration and the sporty feel just makes me glad that I bought it. Get the leather package. Gives a more sporty European feel.
