This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • I love my VW - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought a GLS TDI with leather seats and sunroof. I am loving my car more and more everyday. Being a diesel engine, I get great fuel economy! Other the engine is noisy on the outside, once you get in the car, it sounds like a normal gas car, the car may be even more quiet at crusing speeds of about 60-70 miles/hr. Only one thing I dont like about the car is the cup holder. They get in the way of the radio and CD player!! Otherwise, I would highly recommend buying this car!!

this car is like a wolf in sheeps clothing.Lets just put it this way I surprise alot of drivers when they have to take a better look at the trunk emblem and see that its a VR6.I purchased this vehicle with the 17" upgraded sports package and also modified the suspension by replacing with neuspeed. When I first bought the car I loved it but it was to high. It looks like a SUV until I changed the suspension (night and day difference.) Overall the car is great. I truly recomend this car if you want something practicality and understating. I personally love the 330ci bought I want to sleep at night. ENJOY YOUR VW THEY ARE GETTING MUCH BETTER THEN THEY USED TO BE!

When I was considering by my first VW, I was a little concerned about their reliability track record. Im now happy to report my 2002 (2.0 L) Jetta has run almost flawlessly for its first 30,000 miles! It is an absolutely fun car to manuever throuogh heavy Atlanta traffic.

After weighing all of my options, looking at competitors vehicles. I decided on the best car. The Jetta 1.8T w/ the Tip-Tronic and 17" wheels. The other cars were boring and all looked the same. This one stands out for performance and the "Fun Factor".

Overall, I am thrilled with my car. I had a 1995 Jetta III, and a 1997 Jetta GT. They were good cars, but dont compare to the 2002 Jetta. In fact, I brag so much about my car that two of the girls in my office are now driving Jettas,

I loved my new Jetta until I dove it for an hour. The seat is very uncomfortable! Am I the only one who finds this to be so? I sure hope it breaks in. Otherwise, I love the car.

  • Underwhelmed - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Have owned this car for 14 months now and still not pleased with it. Turbo is overly touchy, handling is poor, lacks extra power at highway speeds and transmission is not overly smooth. Have had minor problems - drivers side window fell off track, mirror adjustment knob broke-off and seal around headlight took on moisture (all 3 items were covered under waranty). Monsoon Sound System is not spectacular (but probably better than a No his, no lows must be Bose system). The car can take a good hit though. Recently was T-boned on the passenger side (11k worth of damage) and the car protected me well.

  • Biggest Pile I Have Ever Owned - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I was really excited when I bought the car. Been all downhill since. There cannot be a car that is more cheaply made than this. Mechanical issues (hoses, coils, traction control, etc.), interior is literally peeling, seats fall apart, antenna is cracking and falling off, engine cover under the car fell off, front bumper has come off twice. Lost lug caps, front grill caps. I could go on and on. Worst car I have ever owned. Will never buy a VW again.

  • 6.5 years, 85,600 miles - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Just traded in my VW and wanted to share a little from my use. Overall the engine and mechanics worked fine, except for the loud rattle and the oil leakage. All the issues I faced were on the interior; broken hinge on glove box, arm rest broke twice, interior film peeled in several areas, stereo and speakers cut in and out occasionally and the cloth as many stated is absolutely horrible. Good gas mileage and nice to drive.
