This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

Typical Jetta problems: car was routinely in shop. Either for annoying exterior hardware/mechanical issues (driver window continually fell off track) or for major electrical issues. Radio stopped working which we then noticed the horn didnt work. We were told that to fix the radio we needed to replace the steering wheel. And this would not ensure the radio would work after this. Engine sputtered and shuddered one day on a road trip which required an emergency stop at a garage to get O2 sensor replaced. Bottom line: VW does not stand by their own cars. They would just simply respond as if this is to be expected from a VW. They suggested we buy a new one.

I am not pleased with this car AT ALL! I bought it brand new in 2001 and for the first 3 or 4 yrs it was good besides the cheap plastic on the interior, broken knobs, broken armrest, door handle material peeling off. After this (warranty no more) all hell broke loose. My ac broke twice, my clutch messed up and now my strutters need to be replace. I have only 65,000 miles on this car and it is only 6 /2 yrs old. I am definitely not buying another VW ever again! Engine light coming on, I wish I had done a little more research on this make and model before I purchased.

My wife & i bought this car with 45k, from day one, the car has been a piece of crap. the car died 7 days after we bought it. after that the mechanical problems, engine light on. for some reason the passenger door wont open unless its from the outside, the trunk release dont work. the engine lights stays on. catalytic converter replaced light still on, new engine mount. engine light still on. engine rumbles the car shakes more than a rattle snake. car in the shop now, needs new wheel bearing, complete tune up $1200. 4 time this year car been fixed. car needs oil change every 1500 miles. right side speakers blew up. Never again will buy a VW. They are worthless.

  • Do NOT Purchase! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is such a headache! I am in the works of purchasing a new vehicle because at 95,000 my transmission has to be rebuilt at a upwards of $4,500! The car is not even worth that! I have only had this vehicle for nearly 4 years and have had to take it in at least two times a year to have major costly fixes. Volkswagens require a lot of care because they are poorly made. It is very hard to find mechanics that know how to service a Volkswagen which makes it more expensive when you find one that does. My advice is to stay away and do not invest your money. Please do your research before hand and read up on all the complaints.

I love my new car! I am so addicted to this car its unbelievable. I love pulling up to a stop light and seeing all those Japanese car (used to have a Honda) rev thier engines. I always wave to them in my rear view mirror as they are eating my dust. Mods are cheap and easy, mostly bolt ons.

I bought a used 2000 GLX VR6 with about 38000 miles on it in March since then I have put about 4000 miles of my own and am totally pleased with my purchase. The car is fun to drive, smooth, quite, and very comfortable. In one long weekend I drove about 1800 miles and even after a 12 hour run from ATL-PHL the car was still comfortable. The Monsoon sound system is very nice, climate control system works well, and I like the heated seats.

  • Love it, better than Civic, but......... - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Great looking car, a little expensive, have had problems with it. Mainly it would die starting it in the morning when it was cold outside. Dealer fixed it after several days, lousy service from them, and they broke my cruise control and had to go back to them to fix that. I have a lot of squeaks and rattles that would never happen in a Japanese car, dont get me wrong I love it, but VW needs some quality improvement to make me loyal.

Wasnt sure how I would like a small car like this coming from owning pickup trucks but Ive been driving it for almost 3 years now and it has been the best vehicle Ive ever owned. Incredible with fuel economy(about 42MPG) with my 4 speed automatic and it is solidly built. Havent had any problems except for a clip in the automatic windows that failed but they replaced them under warranty. Love my Jetta!

  • Never Buy This car or a VW Ever - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

My car is at about 85k and I have had way too many problems with this vehicle. It is by far the worst vehicle I have ever had and I will never buy a VW ever again. I have had to replace the water pump at 62k, the alternator went out, I was just told I needed to replace the catalytic converter, the ect sensor and an addition 2 grand in fixes for a total of 3,200. I had some boots and a cb join that were cracked and leaking that was about 1000 bucks. By far the most unreliable vehicle I have had and hated everything about it. I ripped off the bumper 3 times because it always would catch on the curb because there is no guard on there. Dont buy this car.

Two months(6,000 miles)after I bought my Jetta, the dash lights burned out. I paid out of pocket($150) because it was not under warranty according to the service dept. At 45,000 miles my front passenger window broke ($315). At 50,000 miles, a spring popped out from under the seat and the relay switch for the turn signals has stopped working (not repaired yet). It is also hard to get a loaner. Like everyone else said, "get to know your mechanics @ the serv. dept."
