This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • good riddance! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Finally got rid of my jetta last month. This car has caused me so much grief (and money) during the 4 yrs I owned it. VW replaced the mass airflow sensor after the car died on the highway while I was 8 months pregnant. A few months later the same thing happened so the sensor was replaced again. The car stalls after pulling from parking (cold start) everyday, and VW couldnt figure out how to fix it. The check engine light goes on all the time, after multiple trips back to VW they still couldnt fix it. The replacement parts cost so much too for something that was assembled in Mexico. The rubber material by the door peels and looks disgusting. Will never buy a VW vehicle again ever.

If the window clip problem were not enough, I am back in a rental with the third ignition coil change. VW refuses to change the last one, that is sure to malfunction as well. Great car to drive when it is not in getting fixed. VW America not doing a good job of fixing own mistake.

Its sad because VWs look great when new, but thats about it. As they age, the interiors age poorly, showing wear quickly and making the car look older than it is. The reliability is this: the check engine light comes on at least twice a year and each visit costs at least $300.00 (diagnosis is $100 alone). Recalled parts are replaced once, then when they fail again, you pay. I have been getting very poor customer service. Ive let my friends know to steer clear. If youre going to deal with poor reliability and high repair costs, might as well get a name plate you can be proud of, i.e., a BMW or Mercedes-Benz. That will be my next purchase.

VERY FUN TO DRIVE, QUICK AND HANDLES WELL. WINTER PACKAGE COMES IN HANDY WHEN COLD. NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR DUE TO WORKMANSHIP OF DEALER.

I have had nothing but problems with my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLS Wagon and VW dealerships and care for my car. Every month there is some new problem. I definitely would not recomend this car, or company to anyone. I have never seen such poor preformance and quality, from the vechicle to the people who sell and work on them.

  • Thank God for the warranty! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

While the overall performance of the car was great, the car was seriously lacking in quality and reliability. The life of parts and materials leave a lot to be desired - too many items repaired in only two years. Frustrating dealer experience and parts unavailability. Long-term quality/reliability of this model is very questionable. The two best days of my experience with this car were the day I bought it and the day I got rid of it.

  • I love my Jetta but.... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I love my 2001 Jetta, its really a great car for the money, rides well, reliable, and overall very solid. I dislike however how everything is so very expensive to fix. Any time I walk into the dealership its going to be $200 + in order for them to do what they need to do. I had a relay switch go out on my turn signal (recall), my trunk latch just failed (fixed myself for $40.00), check engine light has been on for about a year with no apparent problem, interior collects lint, side door arm rest is peeling, and the transmission feels like its slipping in second gear. I think for a used car you cant beat it.
