This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

I saw this car sitting at a lot near my home when I was in the market for a new car, I actually wasnt all that interested in a used vechicle but due to financing problems I was running into I decided to give the dealership a try. Within 15mins I was on a testdrive and immediately noticed how well the car handled, with 40,000 miles on it; it still ran as if it was brand ,new I had driven an Impala SS (2004), Malibu (2004), Toyota Camary 2004 and a few others and nothing came close to it except the Imapala which was over double the price. Everything about this car feels quality, the interior, exterior, door handles..

Purchased it used with 18,000 miles on it it has been an absolute blast to drive ever since. Came with all the options and sport suspension (17" wheels) it handles on rails and quick off the go. It has been in the shop a few times and in the twin cities that means 3 weeks to book an appointment. Check engine lights comes on, goes off, comes on. Had to replace the o2 sensor under warranty, at 40,000 miles the mass flow intake went out, that was $300 plus to fix. Real fun to drive, its a car, stuff is going to go wrong with it. I would recommend it to a friend, good bang for the buck.

  • fun reliable turbo - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Bought a manual 2001 Wolfsburg edition in the fall with a ton of miles (130,000). Downsized from a newer jeep liberty for better milage/no payments. The small 1.8 liter engine is amazing on gas, while the turbocharger adds plenty of zip. While driving more conservatively, I went about a month on one tank. But its hard to resist redlining that turbo from time to time. Reliable so far with the biggest problem being a burnt out turn signal. Miserable driving on snow or ice. Interior smells like crayons (read that its the fire retardent foam under the carpet). Large trunk and plenty of room for carseats. Would recommend

I bought this car brand new in 2001 and have no major problems. I also drove it across country and it handled like a dream. I did have to have new brakes at 15,000 miles which I thought was too soon, but other than that this car is fantastic! I have had a previous VW so if you are going to purchase one the extended warranty is a must. VW is expensive to repair, but the quality and style is worth it. RESEARCH the car prior to purchasing it. The cloth collects tons of dust and hair, thats why I bought leather. Ask people who own VW for opions then make a decision.

I have had my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta for about a week now and just love it. Previously having a VW, I knew that I was getting in to something worth my while. The 1.8T engine and manual tranny are near perfect. The premium sound system sounds great. Overall, this car is perfect if you want performance (0-60 in 8.2 sec), good gas milage (25/31), and a a reliable nameplate in Volkswagen. I definitely recommend this car, its a lot of fun!

Glad to see Im not the only one with oil consumption problems! I too was told its normal for the car to use a quart of oil per 1,000 miles. How can that be? My dipstick is dry before each oil change-and I go every 3-4,000 miles. Ive been told by the dealer + corporate that they wont do anything about it-its not using enough oil to be a problem. This has been happening since my first oil change 10 months ago. Also, its essentially a 2 seater since the back seat is so uncomfortable, theres rattling in the doors-I have to open all windows to avoid hearing, + the fact that my best lint brush cant get a hair off fabric..will never buy a VW again!

  • One of the best cars for under $25k - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Let me start by saying, everyone should stop comparing this to the BMW 3 series. Its more appropriate to compare the sister car, the A4 to the BMW. Compare the Jetta to the Acura Integra, but not cars priced about $10k more! Although, the fact that people compare the two says a great deal about the car. The car handles great, its got plenty of power, it was reasonably priced especially considering all the features the car has. Ive put a lot of mileage on the car in the first year and had no problems.

  • Expensive to service - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Handles well. The seats collect fuzz- balls, however with a little work and a pet sponge they can be removed. Rubber interior parts peel. Weve replaced the door handles twice and now the armrest is peeling. By the way the armrest also broke it wont hold position. Some of the interior lights work sporatically. The regular sevice maintenance is expensive. The 50000 mile scheduled maintenance costs about $375 and cosists of mostly checking things and replacing plugs, air filter, a tire rotation and an oil change. Good news is my windows havent yet fallen out.

  • Whats happened to VW? - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

The 1.8Turbo is a blast to drive, but it has been a horror to own. Ive had major mechanical issues (ie engine mounts falling off) that many feel should have been warranty items. Unfortunately, VW customer service was not among this group. Even though Ive been a VW owner for 12 years, and my family has been loyal to the brand for over 25 years, Im going to be selling asap to escape this dismal reliability and customer service.
