This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

This car loks good on paper. Turbo, BBS, sporty suspension atc. I have had NUMEROUS electrical problems. Currently my turn signals dont work, moon roof doesnt work, check engine light goes on and off even thought there isnt anything wrong with the engine, all this started happening the same day. All in all, I have had fun with the car as far as the drivability goes but satisfaction is in the details. I am in the car business and now know that VWs arent worth much on trade due to all the predicted problems and I wouldnt drive/buy another VW. Acura TL will be my next car and I will trade this car in and get KILLED on the trade.

great car to look at, replaced 2 O2 sensors, brakes, bumper pulls off if parked too close to curb, chronic, unresolvable rattle in gear shift, console latch broke, mirror control fell off, cloth interior impossible to clean looks like %&*@ all the time. Never again!

I love the car. Upset that the 2001 has only 155 hp and the 2002 has 185, but these things can be fixed. Easy to work with and one of the best manual cars I have driven. I put about 20,000 miles on my car a year for work and I have never been uncomfortable for a second. Nothing like the feeling of driving in 6 inches of snow and not having to worry about the ABS or traction control not working. I was passing most of the all wheel drive vehicles.

  • Little annoyances of the Wolfsburg... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

1.8T and sport suspension is great. Fun to drive, but not much more. The car gets serviced every other month for annoying problems. The passenger and driver windows have been fixed twice, sun roof broke, in hot weather sticky gue leaks out of doors, interior lights dont work right, passenger door doesnt close right, I could go on...

What a piece of crap. In the first 10,000 miles - bad window regulators, windows fell off the track, heated O2 sensor (twice), bad fuse block and wiring, replaced truck lid activator, replaced fuel door activator, runs rough and hesitates and thats on a great day. Engine light constantly on, rear brakes ground to the rotor at 23,000 miles (how is that even possible), coil wores/plugs $ 560. Catalytic converter clogged at 22,000. Absolute joke, VW service equally as pathetic.

Aversion to warning lamps? Avoid this car. Latest: "Emissions Workshop" lamp triggered by failed airflow mass sensor, causing engine to run rich, emitting too much unburnt fuel in exhaust. VW claims not covered by 8yr./80k mile emissions warranty; EPA would be interested in cause if not coverage of warranty, Im sure. This is 2nd failure of engine electronics; not a good track record. Also, body creaks/groans dont live up to teutonic image of car. Embarrassed that I fell under spell of features list and sound of V6; VTEC 4 cylinder next for me.

  • So far so good - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I purchased this car because of the styling and the need for the four doors (baby). I have read other reviews in this column after purchasing my car and they scare me!!! But I have had it for a couple months and no problems. Love the handling and the hiss of the turbo but is it just me or does this car have really bad lag? Hopefully a chip upgrade will solve the problem!

The TDI is an impressive car, it has more than adequate pickup for around town, and cruises effortlessly on the highway. What other car can you spin the tires in and at the same time get 53 miles per gallon on long trips. The build quality is very high, and VW has one of the best interiors ever made in this car.

  • Wanna Waste Your Money? Buy A VW. - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This was my second car and taught me the biggest lesson of my life. Buying this car means putting a lot of money into it. I was looking forward to blacking the car out and when i saved up money to do so on my project, something always went wrong. In the shop at least 2 or 3 times a month. Burns oil constantly. Electrical system difficulties. Headlight covers get really hazy. The way they have the rear view mirror is ridiculous and doesnt stay on well with heat.

  • Never Again - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This is by far the worst car I ever owned. Since I got it, every month I have to take to the mechanic. Too much money invested for nothing. I just trade it in for a Toyota RAV4 which I love. I wouldnt felt comfortable selling it to someone else, even thought many people wanted to buy it. Beware of the Jetta 1.8T.
