This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

Great car fun to drive! With this car you gotta be careful when you wanna stick it to the floor. The car is light, powerful and fast! Just what I need, and more to merge on to the beltway. Gas is good, so long as I dont lay into the turbo too much. Great Monsoon sound system. I just love the car. Not much room for those in the back seats, however, no ones rides back there anyway!

After 12 years in an Acura Integra, the Jetta felt very strange to me. It was taller, roomier, and more quiet. The GLI VR6 engine was very powerful yet quiet--I sorta missed the whine of the Integra a high RPM. I chose the Jetta GLI because I wanted a car with performance but also a car with some refinement. Its a car that you can dress up or dress down. The only reservations I have are that: 1) it doesnt have the peripheral visibility of the 1991 Integra, 2) its a little bit harder to park b/c its wider and taller, 3) its a little clumsy on corners at higher speeds and, 4) the arrow on the fuel gauge seems to go down fast--the car is very thirsty!

This car is a rocket, it looks and feels solid, finishing is superb. I would buy it again, no question about it. My only complaint is a tendency to rattle: doors in warm weather, some console pieces in cold weather.

  • Great little sport sedan. - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

1.8T is an exciting engine thats also easy to live with and rewarding during normal driving. Engine and ride are smooth and quiet. Sport suspension and 17" alloys betray some road noise and stiffness on bumps, but handling is precise, though a bit marred by overboosted power steering. Clutch is somewhat too soft for sport riding; clutch throw is also too long. I would give the car a 10, if I havent driven a BMW 325i. 8-9 will do just fine.

Purchased as used in 08 with 65000 miles, now has 95000. Love the drive and especially the handling. The problem is a harsh shift from third to forth ( auto trans) and have spent $1500 on a valve body R & R with no help. No codes in computer and not sure what to do now. For those who do their own maintenance, VW uses there own fluids and you cannot go to the local auto parts store and buy oil trans fluid etc, and they tend to be spendy at the dealer. The 100000 mile timing belt R & R is $+-$1000 at the dealer. Frustrated vw owner.

I purchased the vehicle used with 33,000 miles. So far I have not had any major issue and have been very satisfied with the economy. I knew it wasnt a large vehicle when I purchased it, so I cant complain that my 62 figure is somewhat cramped on any trip longer than two hours. I realistically get about 42 mpg highway and 40 city. It is always satisfying to get 500+ miles to a tank and every once in a while put in a tank of biodiesel. My only complaint is that at 38,000 miles it developed a creak in the suspension that only presented itself after I had driven for a while. It did not affect the performance of the suspension, but did annoy me a little.

I bought this car 2 years ago. I wish that i would have researched the engine sizes available, the 2.0 is a weak engine and doesnt get very good gas mileage. I wish that I would have gotten the 1.8T. It comes with the same estimated mpg. The build quality is very good. The styling inside and out is the best ive seen. reliability has been pretty good, sometimes gets flooded. Uses a special synthetic oil that is hard to find and expensive. And at 60,000 yo need you timing belt and water pump replaced. Costs around 800, I got lucky and only payed 450.

I can drive from DC to florida on one tank, and my back doesnt hurn when I finally fill up in Florida. Its great around town and fantastic on the highway. This car is fun to drive, gets great milage and extremely comfortable. When the need arises, it holds tons of cargo. It is our favorite car we won. In fact we us it for the majority of travels and leave the BMW in the garage.

Great performance for the price. All aroung great inside and out. the hp boost for the 2003 yr (25hp) is wonderful and leaves 02 owners wondering why im so quick. also with Esp (electronic skid protection) standard for 03, i have more confidence driving here in the wet weather.

  • YES!!this car is finally out of my life - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

WOW!did this car turn out to be a true lemon. the first day we had it the clutch blew out with 250 miles on it in the mountains of wv. vw was very arrogant and we sat on the interstate for 3 hours! after that fiasco we just had small problems all the time. tread on tires was gone, squeeking, leaking windows, and other annoyances for a one year old car. car has aweful traction, driving on a wet highway at 6070mph it slips all over the place. we just traded it in last week and are thankful we did before the 1 year mark came around. the clutch and many other things are covered under the 1 year warranty. also, avoid larry simmons vw in parkersburg, wv.
