This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

This is the first VW I have ever purchased. I purchased this car 4 months ago and since Ive had to have it serviced twice. First, after 2 months, the car had no power, it couldnt even go 20 mph. Second, the passenger window wouldnt go up. I would caution anyone looking to purchase a new Jetta to be aware that you will run into these problems.

  • Cup Holder Design Flaw - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought my 2002 Jetta GLX last Sept. as a birthday present to myself. I LOVE my car, and am having a blast driving it. However, I never liked the cupholder design, but I never thought I would have a problem with them. Well, I had a cup in the holder that was nearly empty, but it dripped condensation on my climatronic control panel and completely SHORTED OUT the ENTIRE SYSTEM!! Thres nothing, nada, zip, zero. I am so bummed. Gonna go to the dealership and hope for the best.

  • Great Car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I love my VW Jetta. Its quick, handles great, and gets good gas mileage. My only major repair was when I replaced the cat converter (the check engine light came on) at 75,000, but VW paid for this. Besides that nothing major has gone wrong in 83,000 miles. Just some small stuff, like the clip on center console broke, the window stuck down at around 20,000 but the dealer fixed it and it has had no problems since. It doesnt burn oil and it still has the original brakes, gotta love a manual tranny.

2002 VW jetta worst car ever made. Water pump went out, electrical issues, transmission went out, heater problems, many other problems also. All this with only sixty thousand miles. By far the worst car ever made..

  • This car is amazing - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had this car for almost two years now and still walk outside and smile. I will have put almost 70,000 miles on it when I get to two years (I drive from site to site for work) and have had no issues I couldnt handle myself. While parts are expensive for the car, it is amazingly reliable. It may cost $60 to change the oil or $50 if you do it yourself, but you only have to change it every 8,000 - 10,000 miles because it uses fully synthetic oil. I havent sensed any power loss after all this time and hope to keep this car FOREVER.

  • So far so good - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive had the car for a year now with no problems. Still burning oil but my 89 did that until there were 40000 kms on it. No problems with windows or rattles.Fun to drive quotient is very high. Dealership I use for service has been excellent. Cold weather performance here in Canada has been very good.

  • Will not own VW again - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I brought a VW at the advice of a friend. After owning Hondas since I was able to buy my own cars. Since I have owned this car it has been in the shop more times than the previous four Hondas I have owned all put together. The skid plate was "fixed" four times. The Monsoon audio system had to be replaced. The fabric is worn. The black covering on the door handles is peeling off. The trunk does not close and latch anymore, etc. I now have an infant and its time to get a bigger car. I am going back to Honda and wont drive anything else again. Maybe I just got a bad Jetta but I dont want to take the risk and try again. No VWs are recommended by Consumer Reports. I wonder why.

I purchased this vehicle because I was under teh impression that the VW engine would last forever. i have had numberous admissions problems with this car. It has been in for service 8 times total for such problems as oxygen sensors, throttle body, coyle pack, amongst a few more. This was a horrible purchase and I am extremely dissatisfied
