This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • The Most Fun, Least Reliable Car Ive Had - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Bought my Jetta Wolfsburg, or affectionately, "The Puebla Wolfsburgo" in 10/02 with 13,000 miles on it. It has great handling and incredible torque. I could rip around the city then climb up the canyons without this car missing a beat. However, its constant problems quickly overshadowed the fun. Interior and exterior lights went glitchy, sunroof opened and wouldnt close, dash peeled, rear cupholders broke, center armrest broke, engine oil leaked and fouled spark plugs, ignition coil and bearings went bad. And of course, the dreaded check engine light which comes on constantly. All this and only 34,000 miles on the car. Despite the incredible performance, I dont think these cars are worth the headaches.

When its in operating condition, the ride is awesome and fun. Comfortable, stylish & unique features on the interior. I like the way it drives and the comfort, but theres been just too many problems with it to recommend it to others. Window fell into the door, oil plan needed replaced, some computer sensor for $180, serpentine belt and Ive had to replace the same headlight bulb twice w/in last 30K miles. Interior parts look nice but they break easily and are expensive to replace. Trunk latch snapped in cold weather, console latch busted & cup holder broke ($160 for a new cup holder, for example). Just found out the cooling fan is broken ($500). Everything is expensive to fix.

  • Never ever! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I got this car just a few months ago. Ever since I got it, I have had nothing but problems. No skid plate anymore, 3 bent rims, it doesnt take potholes and dips too well. A newer clutch, the throw out bearing is already going out. It needs engine mounts, no matter which way you push your window button, it will go the way it wants to. In less than 3 months I have already had to replace alternator, serpentine belt (twice) battery, brakes and roders, 02 sensor. There is a short somewhere in the car. My lights will randomly flick on and off just driving down the road. Its fun to drive, and speedy. But unless you have a couple thousand saved up in the bank for repairs, dont get this.

  • Bad Quality - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have a 2001 Jetta. The check engine light has come on numerous times during the past couple of years and I have spent more than $1,500 a year on repairs, over and above the regular maintenance. I am really tired of this cars bad quality. My colleague has the same one and has the same problems. I will never buy a VW again! Quality is the key, look at all of the Japanese cars around.

  • Nice car, when it isnt in the shop - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is one of the best driving cars I have ever had. Fast, quick, and amenities up the wazoo. I love the nice leather, rain sensor, Monsoon sound, and tight feel of the car. Unfortunately, this is not ofset by reasonable reliability, and has been the worst car I have EVER owned for reliablilty. In the shop over nine times for major things, not to mention the minor ones. Transmission lock, coolant leak, two coils, three O2 sensors, window fell, fuel pump relay, and on and on. I guess the really bad part is that VW just doesnt seem to care...

  • Most unreliable car I have ever owned - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The Jetta GLX is a fun car to drive the engine is powerful, the handling is great and the brakes are respectable. Unfortunately this car is so unreliable I can not recommend it. So far I have experienced a fuel sensor failure, a broken center console clip, a coil pack failure, spark plug wire failure, a catalytic converter failure and a mass airflow sensor failure. To make the situation worse the car only came with a 24k mile basic warranty so I had to pay for the coil pack, wires and mass airflow sensor myself. If you are in the market for a new car avoid the Jetta GLX.

  • Torn to love... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I "WANT" to love this car. Its been tough though. I test-drive other cars and nothing is better then my Jetta. Yet, I dont trust it. I am disappointed in the electrical problems, yet love when it runs right.

  • Volkswagen Jetta Sucks - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

In one year, I have brought in my VW over 10 times to have it fixed. It is never a good sign when you know everyone by their first name in the service department. The customer service is horrible. No matter the problem, drivable or not, they could not work me into their schedule unless it was atleast a week away. My car is under warranty and they will not give me a loaner. I have currently been a week and 4 days without a car. If youre thinking of buying a VW, think again. Just go to your local service department at the vw near you and youll see how many people are waiting.

  • Mixed Emotions - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I am approaching 30K on my 2001 GLX 5- speed and am sad to say that I wont own it long enough to reach 31K. I love the look and all the neat gadgets the Jetta has to offer-it truly is a fun car and I havent seen any other has everything I could want and more. Pretty crummy that a cd player isnt standard on the top-of-the-line model. Unfortunately, the warranty is out and the problems are just increasing. The passenger driver side window went down and got stuck, the gas cover motor needed fixed and then replacing ($160), engine problem ($800+), driver side door not aligned properly, and the heat is no longer hot. For $25K, I expect my car to be reliable far past the 25K mile warranty.
