This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Great value car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This is my first VW and I have been very impressed. Earlier years (1999 & 2000) had problems with build quality (window regulators, coilpacks), but I have had no problems. I think VW did a good job of working the bugs out. Love the monsoon stereo and sunroof. Really fun to drive. Great power and smooth ride. Good looking car that maneuvers easily. It is a pleasure to drive.

This vehicle is very nice. It is very luxurious, and with the real wood trim, makes me feel like Im driving a BMW.

  • cupholder/cd player - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

FYI: If you have them install the cd player below the radio component, I find it is easier. It still is far from perfect though.

  • Havent Gotten a Complaint Yet :) - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive only had this car for about 5 months now, but I have only good things to say about it. I insisted on the "virtually" fully-loaded silver one and am glad I did. The turbo stalls the pick-up just for a moment, then the little "jet" wants to leave the road when it gets going. Fun to drive, especially with the tiptronic control. The only thing Im missing is the temperature indicator on the driver panel, but have we REALLY gotten so lazy we cant just stick our head out the window to tell?

  • Not Worth the Premium $$$ - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought the 1.8T 5M sedan after reading extensively about the quality of the vehicles build, and its performance and features. I was unilaterally dissatisfied with the quality of this vehicle and it is not worth the "premium" price compared to other compacts. The 2 front doors rattled excessively, the rear right passenger door also rattled and the rear of the car creaked around tight turns. The dealer couldnt fix the problems and referred me to the manufacturer. The manufacturer rep. was unfriendly at best and declared that the car was within specifications although he did not disclose what they were. A letter to VWs president yielded no result.

  • UNRELIABLE - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Sorry warranty....., Transmission engagement switch had to be replaced twice at my own expence, ABS brakes locked up in stop and go traffic, car felt like it was carring a load of bricks. had to replace brake booster after warranty expired,at $900 cost.

  • Safe, powerful, no mechanical problems, - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Drives very well, "dynamic safety" is the buzzword. Standard safety features do not tempt buyer to economize in the wrong places. Station wagons trunk spacious for car size. Engine has a lot of power, actually way more than needed. Fuel economy with turbo manual is _better_ than EPA rating; I get 30 mpg in my normal drive. No mechanical problems after 2 years, 25K miles, Boston winters. Quibbles: Windshield wipers noisy. Console in GLS model has to be in the up position, otherwise it interferes with stick shift, better not have one. Car was delivered without proper wheel balancing and alignment: dealer fixed at no cost, but still.

  • ok car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I think everyone has the same problems with these cars. Drove two hours to pick the car up at a dealership. Drove home about a 1hour after I drove it the water pump went out, Took it back they replace it for free. But I should of listen to my girlfriend, she told me not to keep it after that. Wish I would listen .

  • The best sedan I have ever had... - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

My wife and I currently average 50+ mpg. Need I say more. But I will. The build is incredible. Being a former mechanic, I have never seen so much detail in a sedan of its class. German engineering at its best. I expect, with at least 500000 miles left in the engine, it might, however unlikely, outlast the rest of the car. The cupholders are the only misplaced piece of accessory, as it blocks the radio controls when out, and you have to push it back in to remove a cd.

  • The Worst Car Ive Ever Purchased! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought a 2002 VW Jetta with the Turbo engine. This is the worst car I have ever bought. It has broken down three times due to the coil pack, the turbo went out twice, I have had a bunch of electrical problems and my door would not close. All these problems have happened to a new 2002 car with 14K miles. Im starting the process of getting a Lemon law layer. I will NEVER buy a VW again!!!
