This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • MANY SMALL PROBLEMS = ONE BIG ONE! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I PURCHASED THIS CAR USED WITH 16,500 MILES ON IT. BY THE TIME IT HAD 18,000 I WAS ALREADY REPLACEING THE REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS. EVERYTHING THAT IS MADE OF PLASTIC IN THE CABIN HAS BROKEN AT LEAST ONCE. THE REAR BRAKES STILL HAVE ISSUES THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN RESOLVED AND THE DEALERSHIPS CRACK MECHANICS CANNOT SEEM TO FIGURE IT OUT. THE ENGINE EATS COOLANT, THE COOLANT LIGHT COMES ON RANDOMLY IN COLD WEATHER, AND THE OIL FILTER IS IMPOSSIBLE TO CHANGE ON YOUR OWN! RUN AWAY FROM THIS CAR!

  • Dont buy this car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

the 1.8t is a beautiful car, its not bad on gas and its fun to drive. But do not buy this car, this car will bankrupted you. their are so many electrical problems (automatic window problems, trunk opening problems light problems ect...) that you will run into (and its a lest of $300.00 to get each of the problems fixed). so if you buy this car you better get use to having check engine light permanently on.

  • Good car...If You Have a Lot of Money to Waste - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This car is fun to drive and all, but I dont know how much fun it can be if you see your bank balance going down so fast every time you go for a repair and you have to go for a repair just like you go for a hair cut. It may be its just happening to me, I dont know, but its very frustrating. Ive also owned a Japanese made car and it ran fine even until 100,000+ miles, without any issues until I sold it. The car is comfortable for long trips, luxurious, very fast and stuff....but all the money we have to spend on repairs just undermines the positivity. This is not a reliable car.

I own a 2001 jetta and it is very great I love my car and would recommend it to everyone if youre careful and actually take care of your car the inside would deteriorate. If youre also careful the engine shouldnt break nothing should really go wrong unless its something you did or the previous owner did. Also it should come with a cd player or at least mine did. its great reliable and the best car to have

  • What a Ride - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Driving the 1.8T Jetta is just plain fun to drive. Its quick and agile and a sharp looking car and it has a very good ride. I havent had any of the problems that others have had and have experienced great service at my local dealer. My Jetta is solidly built and its living up to my expectations.

  • VW Jetta GLS 2.0 - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I had a very good experience with my Jetta, bought it in 2001 have 60000 miles on it, never let me down or had any kind of problems, changed tires at around 45K and rear brakes, front brakes have almost no wear even at 60K, car likes synchetic oils, overall solid build quality.

  • Really enjoyed this car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I owned my 01 Jetta Wagon for years and really enjoyed it. It was pretty trouble free but there was some maintenance that had to be done to keep it that way. The gas milage was great and it was fun to drive. Lots of room in the back of the car and that was great since I have a very large dog. I thought that the rear seat was fine for kids but tall adults would have a tight fit. Some of the coating on the interior parts was weird. It was rubbery and would scratch off. I also found that the sunroof drains are a constant trouble. They arent hard to fix in the front but the rear are a pain. If you buy one of these cars know when the timing belt was done. Very important. I sold this car recently as I bought a Vanagon and didnt need two cars.

  • Check Engine Light: bane of my existence - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive had so many issues! Its like theyve gone out of their way to make repairs and maintenance as difficult and expensive as possible. The engine leaks oil, a known VW issue. The worst part is the check engine light. In the 3.5 years Ive owned this car, the CE light has been OFF for a total of 2 months. I have taken it to 5 different mechanics, each one plugs it in to the diagnostics computer and either gets NO codes or codes that make no sense. All they can do is turn it off, but it just comes back on. No one can fix it, no one can even find a cause, but the car cant pass an emissions test, and so now I cant legally drive it. $12K wasted!
