Overview & Reviews
For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.
- Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
- Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

2001 VW Jetta - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Amy - July 16 - 6:43 amI absolutely loved this vehicle when I first purchased it in October of 2006. Now all it does is have a problem after another! First the CD player broke, then the arm rest, then the trunk (which has completely stopped opening), and now the drivers side window doesnt work. Something inside the door has fallen. The window can go down but good luck getting it up. If you do then it starts slowly falling as the day goes by since the window is broken. Leather interior is peeling almost everywhere as well. I am really unsatisfied with the quality of the parts. It runs well but I can no longer get groceries in it or feel the wind. All of this happened before I hit 100,000 miles.

Nothing but Trouble - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Adam - July 7 - 10:06 pmI purchased my 2001 Jetta a year ago. The 2.8 VR6 engine is very sporty and fun to drive. Its suspension is tight yet comfortable. Since I bought this car I have had to replace an ignition coil ($500), spark plug wire set ($170), transmission (under warranty thank god), O2 sensor ($200 under warranty), and ECM ($1500 under warranty). I have had the car back for six days and everything seems to be a ok.

Oil Consumption Issues - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By cw - June 23 - 10:00 amI loved my Jetta but I it was using up a lot of oil. My dealer told me that new engines use up oil and I needed to check my oil every other time I put gas in my car. I new that this was not right so I kept on them. I had fuel consumption tests and was told it was just fine. However, I ran out of oil less than 3000 miles since my last oil consumption test. VW told me that it is acceptable to burn up to 1 qt of oil per 1000 miles. Since mine was using less they would not fix it. Apparently there have been numerous complaints about this issue and VW will not fix the problem. Beware if you have this car. Watch the oil!

By RegLap - June 18 - 10:00 amThis is my second VW purchase. Nothing but problems with my 2001 VW. My previous purchase was a 1996 VW. Great mileage great handling great repair history...BUT my new 2001 VW UGH!!! ignition coil problems, oxygen sensor fail. map sensor fail, power window stuck open during rainstorm! SAME power window stuck open AGAIN after first repair.Soft brake pads needed replacement after only 19,000 miles .My car has spent more time back at dealer for repair than in my garage

Beautiful car, VW service stinks! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By mnsrun - June 12 - 2:00 amThis is my second Jetta and I love the styling and the handling, however, I have had the same no brainer issues as everyone else, windows falling, lights burning out, stupid things breaking, crappy customer service! Have complained about smelly AC since car had 5000 miles on it and VW couldnt diagnose until car out of warranty! HMMMM

Great commuter car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Phlonet - June 5 - 2:00 amIn the first year I was driving 120 miles per day and was getting between 50-55 mpg. My commute lessened considerably, and now Im only getting mid 40s, though on longer trips its back up around 50. While the TDI doesnt have quite as much pep as a 1.8T or a V6, its still sportier than many other "economy" commuter vehicles. Takes a little bit longer to start when its below zero, but have never had it fail to start. Only one mechanical issue related the glowplugs that was misdiagnosed at first, but then fixed properly on a subsequent visit. I wholeheartedly recommend this car to anyone who has to drive any sort of distance.

Very Unreliable for a VW - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By psykosonik - June 4 - 10:00 amJust to let buyers know there are several issues to be aware of before purchasing a new or used 2000-2001 VW Jetta. They are very prone to issues. First off, I bought my car new in Aug 2000, it is a 2001 VW Jetta. In less than 2 years have had an Oxygen Sensor recall, both Driver and Passanger Window regulators have broke, resulting in the windows falling inside the doors, the electrical wiring has had to be rewired, the Brake Switch broke and needed replacing, and the interior plastic is already peeling. I have owned VWs in the past and am just beside myself at the poor quality of this car!!

Great German Wagon - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By robpsdhs - May 8 - 2:06 pmThis car replaced a 2000 Beetle (I loved the Beetle but needed more useful cargo space). It has very few negatives: its mileage isnt great. Ive used regular gas for three years. The mpg actually improved from when I used super. It has no knocks or pings. I had a problem with the coolant system when I moved to the desert. The coolant evaporates in this intense heat. Now, the positives: the car is great. Its handling after six years is still crisp and responsive. Its fit / finish are excellent. Even using regular gas the acceleration is excellent. I also have a 04 Mustang Convertible. My Jetta wagon is so much more fun to drive. I love this car.

WOW I love this car!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Kay S - April 26 - 1:03 amI just bought this car a week ago and I already know I will be keeping it till it kicks. I love driving it, it is so much fun! The handling is amazing, the shifting is smoother than anything I have ever driven. Take off is the best part. And I can fit all three of my kid seats in back! Thank you Volkswagen for making such a beautiful car
