This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

I bought my Jetta 1.8T 5M on April 02. Ive been searching around for cars for 2 months and i skipped a Physics Test to take a look at the Jetta. 10:15am: searched around for a Jetta. 10:45:test drove a silver 1.8T. 12PM:went to work. 8PM:Got out of work. 8:30PM:BOUGHT THAT JETTA!!! With just one test drive that car has impressed me! Ive owned that car for lil over a yr n it has 16k miles on it n all 16k miles were fun to drive! The acceleration is awesome! i luv the sound of the turbo kicking in and iv gone 135mph!! If your looking for a car with good fuel effiency (26-28 city/hwy as of now for me) and good performance, the VW Jetta is the way to go! :)

  • Problems After Warranty Expired! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The first four years that I owned my 2002 VW Jetta I didnt have any major mechanical problems. I havent been super happy with the car in general. I drive a lot for work, and its annoying that the car is loud on the highway. The main issue is that my warranty JUST ran out about two weeks ago and all of a sudden the driver seat adjustments stopped working and my power steering went out last night. I was driving downtown San Francisco and I heard "pop" and then all of a sudden it was like I was driving a dumptruck. I am sure that VW is going to kill me with the charges for this repair. I had planned on keeping this car until it stopped working, but now I may buy something else and never return to VW.

  • 2003 GLS 1.8T Triptronic - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Lucky me, I bought a 2003 Jetta in Jan 2003 after all the problems in previous years were ironed out. Just over 6,000 miles and havent had one problem yet. Sometimes I feel like the other shoe is going to drop, though. I just dont like the turbo lag with the Triptronic. I understand that you can go back and forth with it but sometimes I dont have the feel of what gear Im in. At the time of purchase my wife didnt want another manual trans in the garage. I think the manual would be easier to drive because I would always know what gear Im in. Other than that, Im happy soooo far.

So far so good. Car is FAST. Little tight in the back seat but a real fun driving machine. Car handles great and is quick off the light however have a hard time keeping the tires from spinning. A very solid performer.

  • PLEASE READ THESE REVIEWS! THEY ARE TRUE!! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my 2002 VW Jetta in 2004 used 40,000 miles. From day one nothing but problems. Engines coils, water pump ( like 3 times), oil pan, hoses, transmission. The list can go on and on.. I put myself in debt trying to fix this car. So EXPENSIVE to fix. I felt the trans was slipping shortly after my purchase. I kept taking it to the dealer before my warranty went out they couldnt feel what I felt while driving.. A year later after the warranty went out so did the transmission. I paid $2,600 to fix it and it still wasnt fixed the correct way!!!! Every time the car went to the shop my bill averaged $500-800. DONT BUY A VW PLEASE. Youll regret it!!! Also no mechanic knows how to fix them!

  • love my TDI wagon - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I drive this thing hard commuting in and out of SF. I get a consistent 37 mpg during my two week fill up period and thats hard driving up and over SF hills with some freeway mixed in. Its comfortable for me as the driver but the back seat is a bit limited in leg space behind me because I am 62" and the seat is all the way back leaving about 5 inches of leg space back there. No Mechanical problems ever, always run low sulfur. Even with the 90 HP it still pulls fully loaded w 4 people and gear over highway 80 Donner pass at 75-80 mph. I smile at the SUVs because I know Im getting at least 2 or 3 X their mpg as I pass them over the mountain :)

  • Ho-hum - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

So-so vehicle. Turbo lag aggravating. Engine maintenance lights been on 2 times in 7000 miles. Reason unknown. I would not recommend the optional sport suspension package. The Michelin 225x45/R17 Pilot HXMXM4 tires are impossible to obtain locally (had a flat - after 9 days of trying to obtain tire, I restorted to another tire type). Dealers sales mgr no help.
