For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

I bought it with 13,000 miles on it about 3 years ago because I wanted a comfortable car with great mileage as I am in the auto wholesaling business. The TDI delivers on these primary points. Handling and performance are great, the TDI while short on HP delivers great torque and acceleration for most situations. I am averaging 42 mpg consistently with the automatic transmission in combined (mostly highway) driving. I buy and sell up to 50 used vehicles a month, mostly late model and of all the Jetta models the TDI is tops for resale in this regard.

Love this little car! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By kerfoot - October 1 - 8:16 pmI got this lovely little VW eight years ago after driving an old model Ford Explorer and I loved the change! The Jetta has been so reliable and comfortable. Not to mention much better in gas mileage. The console is very convenient with all knobs and buttons within an easy hands reach. Very comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Not to mention a HUGE trunk for such a small car. Very well crafted and sturdy. I always felt safe driving her. In almost eight years, she only was in the shop once for a sensor failure. With punctual oil changes and maintanence, the Jetta will run like new for a loooong time!

By Gary B - September 13 - 11:03 pmWe have had our 2001 Jetta now for a little over two years. It was basically bought for my wife, who doesnt drive many miles. Overall, I think the car is, at best, average. I find the leather seats to be extremely uncomfortable. In fact, I cant seem to drive it for more than fifteen minutes before my lower back starts killing me. I also dont find it to be user-friendly at all. The cupholders are in the way of the radio. Personally, Im sorry we bought this car.

Inferior Interior - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Kahn - September 3 - 10:00 amIts like driving a huge "lint brush"!!! Anything article of clothing worn sticks to the seats & the doors! I have complained repeatedly to VW Customer Care, to no avail! VW offered to send me a "Kit" to help deal with the problem (Kit=(1) lint brush and a rag)...go figure! I asked if they had received complaints?...the operator stated, "No." I asked, "Why does VW conveniently have a kit available to deal with a problem they say does not exist!??" The answer received was so ridiculous, I cant even remember what the response was!!! Not only is it annoying to have to continuously clean this car, but its embarrassing to have to explain why the interior looks like CRAP!!!!

By BellaVw - August 30 - 2:00 amI Have found my 2001 Jetta GLS TDI to be an absolute joy to drive. Granted, I treat it with care and get the recommended service as suggested in the manual. It has never failed me not even in cold midwestern winters. The 49-50 miles per gallon was a strong reason for choosing the TDI. I had previously heard of the old dreaded "deisel dogs", but the turbo 1.9L diesel engine delivers a peppy and sufficient acceleration. Im constantly receiving compliments on its appearance and ride. Its without a doubt, the best car I have ever had the pleasure of owning! Give it a try.

By walter - August 23 - 3:46 amSince I bought this car, I have had a lot of fun driving it. It is very good on gas as opposed to the 2.0L model. It has lots of power and great handling. I wouldnt trade it for anything else....well maybe a 2002 model because its got more power.

Perfect Balance between Sport & Comfort - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By jddaigle - July 30 - 10:00 amI got my Jetta because I wanted a car that would be comfortable and fun to drive on my 70-mile round trip highway commute, but would also be a good car to toss around on back roads on the weekend. For me its suspension and ride are the perfect balance between being sporty and comfortable. The turbocharged engine is also a great design, giving smooth, ample power and good fuel economy. I dont mind the small rear seat area because I seldom carry more than 1 passenger & the short wheelbase makes for better handling.

A Nice Ride - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Goodriver52 - July 26 - 10:16 amMy Jetta GL has 128,000 miles on it now and still has the original front brakes, exhaust system and clutch. The 2.0 liter 4 gets excellent gas mileage and the 5 speed manual trans is fun to use. I take it to the dealer for servicing every 5000 miles. Maintenance is expensive but well worth it. This car has been trouble free and I hope to get at least 300,000 miles before letting her go. Even tho the 2.0 is not a muscular engine it is very smooth. This cars handling is tight and very maneuverable.

fun to drive - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By huskerfan - July 24 - 2:00 amI bought my jetta about year and a half ago. I have not experienced any problems with it thus far. One thing i do question is the build quality. It may be my imagination but when i go around corners i do hear a noise (no in the suspension) but in the door frame area. All in all it gets great gas milege and it is fun to drive.

I HAVE BEEN IN A RENTAL CAR 12 TIMES IN THE FIRST YEAR THAT I PURCHASED MY JETTA. IT HAS BEEN NOTHING SHORT OF A HORRIFIC EXPERIENCE AND I WISH TO WARN EVERYONE AND ANYONE TO NEVER EVER BUY A VOLKSWAGON!
