This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

People all seem to have weird problems with their Jettas, but mine runs great and has never let me down. I love this car!

  • Great Car! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this car used with 50,000 miles on it. It has been a great car. The check engine light was on at the dealer, but they fixed it before I took possession, it has been great ever since. (made it easier to negotiate price anyway:) ). The only major problem so far was the lower torque strut. It stripped a bolt and broke the other, but it wasnt hard to fix. The interior rubber coating was a bad idea, but not hard to remedy with a trim kit. All in all a great car in all the important areas; performance, general good looks, handling, general reliability. The handling doe require some tuning to limit body roll.

I absolutely love my TDI. It took a while to find one with a 5 speed, but it was worth the hunting. I cant believe this kind of pick-up from a standstill on a diesel. And naturally, unless youre in the market for a hybrid, you cant beat the mileage. Plus, even though the car is (comparatively) low-priced as far as German sedans go, it seems to be an eye- catcher, not to mention that there almost seems to be a TDI clique/club/cult? Comfortable and stylish interior for two adults (dont plan any road trips for four 6-footers) Only real complaint is: why doesnt VW give up on the dial knob for seatback adjustment that theyve been using ever since the (original) Beetle?

  • Great car but still needs work - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Overall quite happy with the car comfort and handling super especially tight corners and turns the turbo makes it all worth driving and gas mileage is pretty good 600+ kms highway driving / tank bad things so far all four doors sqeak and required constant lubrication also striker pin adjusted weekly on front drivers door (creaks when car moving under 20 km/h)

  • It is so much fun - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had more powerful and bigger cars but none that are more fun. Last summer, I traded in my 1998 Maxima SE for a Jetta, Wolfsburg edition. It was a great decision. The drive of the Jetta is so responsive, tight and perky. My favorite car previous to this one was my 1998 Jetta. This has many more creature comforts but what a car and what a drive!

  • Not really worth it. - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I owned my Jetta for almost 3 years. It was initially fun, but as I put miles on the car the check engine light became a familiar occurrence. Took it to independent mechanics to save a little on repairs but it seemed like Id leave just to have another issue crop up. Started taking it to the local dealer so of course I paid through the nose for repairs (like all German cars). While not quite as expensive as my Mercedes to maintain, it still felt weird paying a premium for maintenance on a non-luxury badge. There were the enjoyable times with the car, it was loaded with great features and it was quiet and quick. But in the end, the bad outweighed the good.

  • We love our 2001 GLX VR6 - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

The car is solid and handles very well. The VR6 has plenty of power but seems to really come on-line at higher speeds and RPMs. The leather interior is of superior quality and the Monsoon stereo really cranks and has many features. The sport package really helps the car handle well even at speeds in excess of 100 mph and the 17" wheels really set off the appearance and stance of the car. This car has been often mistaken for a BMW with good reason and is a cousin of the Audi A-4.

  • I got a great one!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Like other reviewers, I had a window clip break so that I could not roll up my window. The local VW dealer, from whom I did not buy the car, replaced it immediately as well as the other window which had not broken, they were extremely helpful. I also had the car not start one time shortly after purchasing, but it turned out to be a problem with the key fob, also fixed free of charge. I have read all the bad reviews, but I have been extremely happy with this car. I have driven it tons and I love it. I did also find however that you need to keep an eye on the oil, it does need about a quart every 1k.

2001 GSL 4 dr, theres a few things that have issues...(note WITHIN one year) front grill feel off, door handles (rubber) peel, the dash around the stick has a latex coating peels, extior paint bad. Then last month the window fell. Remember, cosmetic is not covered. The engine runs great, has pick up.

  • Lint Trap!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I came on this to see if everyone with this car had the same problems and they sure did. My oil is gone literally every 1000 miles...and they tell me thats normal...ya ok. my passenger windown just fell into the side door shattering...that was common so they fixed both windows no problem but still inconvenience...the seats are embarrassing since it looks like i got into a fight with a cat and it won (winter sweaters) lint all over the car and vacuum doesnt pick it up (stuck)...on a positive note it is excellent on gas and no major mechanical problems:-)oh almost forgot within a yr of having the car i need new rotters and pads!
