This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Fun car, hate the check engine light - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought my Jetta two months ago and have put about 2000 miles on it, it had 93000 when I bought it. I love the looks of the car and the features are second to none in the small car realm, the heated leather, sunroof, radio controls on the steering column, its very fun to drive and fairly economical, it gets around 31 mpg, my only complaint is the check engine light, no matter how many repairs, it will not go off and stay off. $530 later Ive decided to let it be on. Sometimes I get so mad about it but then I drive the car and remember why I love it, its fun to drive, more classy than civic or corolla... did I mention its fun to drive?

  • Unreliable but fun and sexy - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is fun to drive, sophisticated in exterior styling, very responsive and quick acceleration. BUT Ive been stranded on a dark road at night one time by an indeterminate electrical problem; limped home on a very hot day with my elderly parents along (needed a NEW transmission that time); had the ignition coils replaced within 500 miles of going out of warrenty (the dealer didnt charge); and now the trouble light is on again.

  • Rattles!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I cant stop all the rattles! The instrument panel is the worst followed closely by the drivers door and then the rear door tweeter mounts. Now the A/C control backlight has burnt out. 8 months and instrumentlights are burning out? AND the dealer said that the vibration I feel on the highway during acceleration is an inner CV joint starting to fail! I traded a 7yr old BMW with less issues than this car. If you want an aftermarket stereo, dont get the Monsoon! And if you decide you want to pull out your radio, be prepared to go to the dealer to reset your alarm. Too many issues, for such a new car, especially for the price. Too bad I am so upside down or it would be GONE!

  • Dont buy this car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The look of the car was the first thing that caught my eye..I should have looked away. No major mechanical problems, just really annoying quality ones. The car squeeks like crazy, from everywhere! The dashboard, the front end, the steering column, etc. I had to be towed out of my own driveway when the computer failed and the car wouldnt go into gear. Now my directional signals dont work. The dealerships mechanics are terrible, whats the use of a warranty when they keep telling you nothing is wrong? For this money you should buy something else.

  • Best Car for the Price - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car after my last lease (99 Z24 Cavalier) expired. I have driven tonns of cars in the past and really researched the market before I bought this car. Drives and performs like a dream and so far (knock on the wood) "Kein Problem!". Highly recommended for anyone looking for serious value for the money.

  • Avoid it...or pay... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is my second VW Jetta. Traded my 98 Jetta GT. In fact, Ive never owned any other car but a VW! I love this car, but...nothing but problems. Heres the "brief" list: 335 miles - dash rattles, door rattles. 2,400 - glove box light 24,301 - dash lights 26,250 - both front window regulators 32,000 - two wheel bearings 36,506 - brake light switch and coil pack. 42,000 - BBS wheels pitted. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE IN MEXICO. This is a car I have babied since day one! I called vw to complain, and they could care less. NEVER AGAIN VW...NEVER! Hello Honda Accord.

  • Dont get sucked in! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Do not, I repeat DO NOT! Buy this vehicle used. If you own one now, dump it before you hit 90,000 miles. It will have all the serious problems that everyone else mentions. Especially the screwed up rear mounted timing chain that requires the transmission to be removed for this otherwise simple repair on a "Normal" car. This car is junk!

  • Problematic - but I still love it! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive loved my Jetta GLS TDI ever since I bought it. Its such a sharp looker and you really cant beat the fuel efficiency (45+mpg). However, I have had a few of the minor problems mentioned here already (the windows, peeling interior surfaces, finicky CD player). That said, I still love the interior - its so clean and well designed - and the blue hue of the lights at night are so cool. The Jetta is certainly feature rich - but, I have certainly had problems with some of them. This car certainly could use some improvements in the electrical and interior department. Also, for those with the auto tranny, the shift lock mech. can be a pain - watch out for a faulty brake light switch.
