This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

I bought the 1.8T with the sports package 225/45/17 and the car handles great I also took the manual transmission. So far so good. Dont like the cup holders blocking the stereo controls but that is it.

  • Oil burning, tranny chewing. - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

My Jetta with 64,000 miles. 100% of its service on schedule performed at only VW dealers. Last week the auto developed a shifting problem between 2nd and 3rd gear. We took the car to VW where Several shocking events then occurred: 1. VW trannys are sealed, not serviceable, and to check what was wrong with the shifting would cost $648. 2. This was a common problem on the 4cyl Jetta 3. Our $648 would go towards the cost of 1 of 2 outcomes: (1) New Valve Body in the Tranny $1800 or (2) Re manufactured by VW tranny for $4400-The car is worth 6-7000 bucks putting us in an interesting dilemma. [Side note, the car burns ~1 quart of oil per 1,200 miles which the dealer wouldnt fix under warranty

  • What a blast! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I was looking for a 4 door car with a manual tranny that was fun to drive, has some get-up & go and wasnt going to break the bank. I think I found the best car out there that fit those requirements. I puchased it used from a private party. He took good care of it and had all records and services and the local VW garage. It has run great! It jumps off the line and has plenty zip. Watch out or a speeding ticket will follow. I did a lot or research before I purchased this car and there was some talk about the engine problems but I think most of those are with the newer version that came out in the start of 2003. Mine has the 174 HP motor and it runs great with no problems. I love the tight cornering and the handling is awesome!

I love my Jetta GLS!! It is everything the dealership told me, and this by far is the best car I have owned so far! The warranty package is acceptional!

  • VW sells LEMONS and doesnt care - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The car itself would be great if it didnt break down every 2 weeks. The WORST part of it all is the VW customer service. If you EVER have a problem, they will laugh at you and tell you tough luck. They sold me a lemon, and they wont take responsibility for it. My car has broken 8 times in under 2 months. DOCUMENTED evidence. Better Business Bureau case opened against VW, still VW doesnt care.

  • Bang for the Buck - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Youd be hard-pressed to find a combination of styling and features in a similar car. After driving the Passat V6 and Jetta VR6/1.8T, I opted for the 2002 GLS 1.8T w/ every option available. It was just a fun car to drive. It was a tough car to find (9/01), so the dealer tried to give me the supply & demand surcharges for silver, rare options, etc. You’ll experience the same headache with the New Beetle Turbo S about now. Needless to say, I worked a good price and have been extremely pleased.

I love the car! runs fast and easy to drive-takes the mountains well. I am now looking into the deisel wagon so I can have more space for luggage.

  • Trust me youll love it - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I Didnt want an SUV but I did want the flexibility to haul whatever I need to. My wife and I chose the manual and BOY does that Turbo have a nice kick to it! Definitely get the Monsoon system too it makes for great road trips. We have had absolutelty zero rattling sounds from this car. Cant understand what was up with the editors car. We had looked at the Nissan Altima as well but the interior materials do not compare and it drove like a Dodge Intrepid. (Nissan Sentra Spec-V now thats a different matter, but too small) We also looked at the Saturn Wagon which had cheap interior construction and ho-hum looks.

  • Hope you live close to the dealer - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had to take my Jetta to the dealership 3 times in the last 8 months to get the windows fixed. The lift mechanisms keep breaking. So unless you live within 10 miles of the dealership, and even then it is a pain, the problems override the fun in driving.
