This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Poor Mans Audi A4 - and more! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Who needs Quattro anyway. And for a $5,000 less, who would not be willing to live with the imperceptibly higher level of vibration. The car corners like a champ, it accelerates like a rocket, it comes to a stop quickly, and it cruises down the highway as smoothly as any pimp-mobile. The GLX package with the sport wheels has definite curb appeal - even valets and gas station attendants, jaded as they might be about everything automotive, comment on the car! The on-dash trip computer tells you everything you need to know, the cruise control doesnt require any training to operate, ample headspace give you the feel of a much larger car.

  • DO NOT BUY THIS CAR - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Interior: Paint on door handle, stereo and cup holder peeled off. Faulty cup holder spill drinks while driving. Center console mechanism broke and will not support its own weight. Temperature controls do not light up. Exterior: bumper thing on front has too little clearance and will rip off if you get too close to a curb. Front air vents on bumper fell out while driving on highway. Engine: Transmission failing it has problems going from a stop to moving without jerking heavily and randomly decelerates while driving at a steady speed. Car dies while driving with no check engine light to trigger a code. On a better note, itÂ’s comfortable and I get 26 mpg

  • Wont purchase again - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Have a 01, GL with 35K, enjoyed driving it until had a "computer and air sensor" problem. Dealer had my car for 2 weeks - poor communication/service. Should be reliable at 35K. I am selling for a Mazda. Do your research before purchasing. Hopefully improvements are being made with service.

  • Be wary of VR6 w/ auto trans - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Bought a used 2001 Jetta VR6 automatic to replace a 2001 Beetle 1.8T 5-Speed. This was the 8th VW Ive owned (several GTIs, Sciroccos, a Karmann Ghia) but the first VR6, the first 4-speed automatic and the first with unexpected issues. Electrical gremlins made themselves known within the first 1000 miles we put on the car. First, it would occasionally refuse to start unless you reseated the battery-box fuses. Then the sunroof began opening spontaneously. The dealership wasnt able to sort the electrical problems, so I took it to my usual private VW expert. He rolled his eyes and said that VR6 automatics are notoriously problematic (though he had praise for the 2.0 and 1.8T manuals).

  • Fun Card - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I think that the new Jetta is a great car. It is a bit smaller than what i thought, and it is right now being one of the down sides, at least for me. But besides that, i believe it is a great car!

  • The Bumper! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

The bumper keeps getting stuck on curbs. I back out, the bumper doesnt. Its plastic, and the screws just tear right out. Dealership doesnt cover it. Annoying! But love it otherwise...

  • Do not buy - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Please do not buy VW no matter what you do. It has poor build quality and the dealerships are rude and useless. I certainly would never buy another VW again. I have 75000 miles on my car in 3 years and have had a window regulator problem, many break lights replaced, an ABS problem, a coolant sensor problem, and the interior of the car has deteriorated. If you do own one, your performance will be much improved by replacing the OEM tires with an all season performance tire (as I did). Using 15-40 oil helps stop usage. I used to use a quart per 1500 miles, now I use hardly any in 4000 miles

  • Nice Car - LOTS OF REPAIRS - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Really like the car for past 2 yrs. Lots of features for the price. BUT, several problems. Power windows break down in the door when rolled down (2 of mine did) - VW extended coverage. Several owners & myself had horrible smell for the first few thousand miles - smells like something dead. Temperature gage broke. Brake pedal switch broke 2x, got stuck because car would not go in gear! Check engine light on @ 26K mi, needs new oxygen sensor already. Shifts rough @ 2K RPM. Sometimes goes in rvrse 5-10 feet when in drive. Console chipping off. But other than unreliability, Id like it.

  • Class Action Lawsuit - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Initially, I loved this car, it was a blast to drive and is very stylish. That was until the problems started. This will read just like so many other reviews. Rear brakes went at 20K, Mass air flow sensor went at 30K, water pump went at 40K, coil pack and assoc. electircal went at 60K. I paid $25K for this piece of junk and expect better from VW. With so many of the same problems occuring with so many of these cars, there definitely should be some accountability on VWs part. These repairs should be covered. I have no choice but to seek out other owners to join me in a class action lawsuit. At this point, I simply cannot afford not to sue. Contact me if interested.
