For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Not So Great Car with Great Mileage!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By JLB - May 24 - 9:20 pmI understand that VW has always been a bit "quirky" as I have owned three. This particular car has been somewhat of a nightmare. From the second day of ownership, the car was in the shop for 7 weeks because of incorrect engine assembly. After it was returned it was fine for the first 6 months. From that point on I have been through 3 sets of brakes on the back only! (The front are still at 40% and considered normal by the dealership) 2 transmissions(auto), 1 sunroof motor, 5 oxygen sensors, 1 a/c compressor, 3 sets of glowplugs(and I live in PHOENIX!), NUMEROUS window mechanisms and motors and several front door latches and alarm sensors!!! The horn has been replaced 5times (still wont work!

My favorite car to hate... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By d and b - May 22 - 9:56 pmSheesh, when I bought this car a few years ago I was so thrilled, my first car out of college and my first new car ever... bought all by myself! Three years and thousands of dollars on maintenance later...its paid for and on the financing side of things, I have about 72,000 miles on it now and have replaced (in no specific order) rear brakes, mass airflow sensor (twice) 02 sensor (front and back? twice), catalytic converter, spark plugs and wires (twice), and now the A/C doesnt work... I live in the Mid-Atlantic and its hot as all this summer...grrrr. Look, Im not one of these hard on a car people, Ive babied this car from day one... now Im bitter. The car is still hot though.

Love it and hate it... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Thomas - March 27 - 6:40 amI love the looks, power, and comfort of my lil Turbo. I like to drive it and get a lot of compliments on the extras I have added. The problem is that it is a money pit. Things like fuel sending kits ($400) and mass air flow sensors (warranty) keep going wrong with it. It has about 70k on it and the tranny doesnt engage for about 2 seconds after putting it into gear. The back seat is so small (30 in. rear leg room) that a properly installed baby seat willnot fit unless you are under 5 feet tall and drive with your knees in the dash. I am selling it due to the no room factor and unreliability. Not to mention that the VW dealership has damaged it on 2 separate occasions. Beware the money pit.

Great Car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By gestenta - February 22 - 4:13 pmI bought my 2001 Jetta GL with 6 miles on it. It is the base model and does not have any of the power options which people consistently complain about in reviews. The car now has 230,000 miles on it and runs better than ever. I am a do it yourself type, but all in all its been a great car. Changed the oil every 5000 miles with Catrol Synthetic Blend.

Most Reliable I ever owned - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By autowolf - January 27 - 2:39 amI have owned the car for 3 years and to this day it has been in more close calls than any other car I have owned, but never let me down. I had to pull over on hwy I89 for over heating once, the problem was a leaking seal at 160k miles and it was an easy fix. Off the road one icy dirt road in the winter, thanks to the cars design I was safe in a ditch unfortunately, but safe from scratches on the paint and I was only shocked a little by the event, driver error and winter conditions. I have been kept safe on the winter roads thanks to this car and it has been the most fun car in its year and class that I have ever driven.

Great Car, Dealers are terrible - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By idontcareaboutuserna - January 19 - 2:00 amIve owned the car over a year and have had no major problems. I am still excited to drive it. I am especcialy reminded of this when i go away a use arental. My big complaint, and this is big enought that i will not buy another, is that all VW dealers ive been to are terrible. From the time I bought it to all oil changes to simple warranty repairs or anything they are just a huge hassle. VW should look into this. No one should like their car as my as I do and not plan on ever getting another VW.
