This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

Well most problems that I have had are cosmetic but nothing to serious. I am now having a second problem with the brake switch. All in all I love my Jetta. I figure the problems I am having could happen to any car. This is an awesome car to drive and I love driving. I am completely sold on VWs.

My experience with this vehicle has been one of my worst experiences ever. The day I drove it off the lot, I knew I had made a mistake. The car had a booster problem which caused the brakes to apply when you perhaps did not want your brakes to apply. Finally, Volkswagen was forced to repurchase the car because of the "Lemon Law".

  • "Check Engine Light" 3 agonizing words - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This Jetta has been in the repair shop 8 times in 12 months for recurrent electrical/computer problems.. either the service people were incompetent or this car is a real lemon. All of the VW service people I spoke to tacitly admitted that the Jetta has its share of problems. One even encouraged me to trade it in for a Honda. Also, this is one model that you are continuously jerked back and forth with the automatic upshifting and downshifting. Ill never buy a VW again.

Incredible Car!! I am getting 50 mpg average and I think sometimes better on the highway! I have had it almost two full years with 40k + and have not had even a blip...with the exception of a replaced radio (no big deal) under warranty. Anyone looking for a reliable, fuel efficient, and reasonably priced car should get one.

this engine blows all comparable models away! honda, toyota, etc. manual trans is a must! rides great at high speeds. Have had no major problems since bought. only problem is leg room in rear, there is none for adults.

This car is very fast and a lot of fun. I too had the coil problem, but my dealer fixed it quickly and gave me a rental in the mean time. Since then it has run flawlessly. Second gear is a bit funny. If you dont hit it just right it can bog a bit. Otherwise, Im looking forward, and fully expecting, to taking it to 300k miles.

  • My car hates me! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Bought my jetta used. Ran great 4 a while then the problems started. 2 water pumps, 2 alternators, all round brakes once a year, hose harness broke causing oil to leak on fire wall, timing belt, lights blow out or short out until you tap them often, all 4 VW caps on wheels fell off. Bumper cover almost fell off, paint peeling on hood, front arm rest lid broke, stereo knobs fell off, radio comes on by itself sometimes causing battery to go dead when car is off and parked, moonroof has a mind of its own sometimes wont close for a few tries, steering wheel and dash trim is peeling. Need a new transmission and emission work which I cant afford so she will sit while I cont. To make pymts on her!

  • Too many trips to the shop - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I like how the car looks, drives, etc., but I have had too many trips to the garage. Both drivers and passengers front window malfunctions, an engine sensor, transmission gasket leak, dash lights, and there is still an intermittent shifting issue that never seems to crop up when the mechanic is looking at the car. Dealership has been responsive, all repairs covered under warranty.

  • Good commercials, bad car! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had nothing but problems with my 2002 Jetta 1.8T. It looks very good, is fun to drive(when it goes into drive!) But has so many problems in the first two months, that I would strongly urge anyone considering buying one to really reconsider. I can not put my car into drive directly, have to go into 3rd or 4th gear and then sometimes it will go into drive is the largest of the problems.
