This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen eliminates the GLX trim level for wagons -- this means that those who prefer the VR6 engine to the 1.8T engine will have to stick with the sedan. As a consolation, GLS wagons equipped with the 1.8T are eligible for a premium package, which bundles traditional GLX content like power seats, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, wood interior trim and a trip computer. Additionally, VW has made the 1.8T available on both the GL sedan and wagon. GLs now have power windows and mirrors, cruise control and a CD player, while the GLS gets a standard sunroof and alloy wheels. All Jettas are available with stability control (ESP), heated seats and the Monsoon sound system. Other changes include a ULEV rating for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, redesigned cupholders and backlit buttons on the standard stereo head unit.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons, tight rear-seat legroom.

  • A great car with great mileage... - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Keep an eye on certain maintenance items: always use synthetic oil (Delvac 1), keep an extra mass air flow sensor on hand, and find someone with a VAG-COM to make adjustments to the EGR setting to reduce intake clogging. This should lead to many trouble free miles. I regularly travel over 800 miles per tank of fuel, averaging over 48 mpg. Even spirited driving nets 42 mpg!

  • Feel like a Queen in my Car! - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

I love driving my Volkswagen Jetta, the seats are the right height to see over the hood. The handling feels sturdy and safe. The seats are comfortable on long distance trips, and the heated seats are a must have. The ride is smooth and stable. Turning corners feels very reliable, and I feel safe, even when I was rear ended. The car was hit very hard, but damage to the driver side was minimal. I owned five Volkswagen Bugs in the past, but this Jetta is the ultimate dream car for me for driving and handling. When its time to move up I will purchase another Jetta.

  • Love my 03 GLS 1.8T, with reservations - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

After looking at Mazda Protege, Mazda6, Nissan Altima, and Honda Civic, I decided to buy the 03 Jetta GLS because it was true sports sedan. The 1.8 turbo gives it great accelaration and the sports/luxury package with the 18" allou wheels and performance tires provides awesome handling... although the tires generate a little bit of tire roar on some pavement types.

  • Jetta is great! - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

My biggest helpful hint would be to wait until November if you can hold out. The TMV has gone down almost $1500 in one month since August - so you have a good chance of it going down even further. Also, print out your Edmunds.com info. and bring it to the dealer with you. Dont pay MSRP or dealer invoice again! I got mine at $500 below the TMV at the time. Best of luck & enjoy - the Jetta GLS 1.8T is a great choice.

  • Awsome new engine - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta

Well folks I just got a 2004 Jetta and man its great. Aside from the new trunk lid design and chrome outside and around the guages, it run wonderfully. The HP is up by 10 but the torque is up i think about 30ft lbs. The only thin im not really jazzed on is the sound system. Its not bad...but, MTX makes a subwoofer that fits on the right hand corner of the trunk and its really brings the bass nnotes to life. Jazz has never sounded so good. If you havent driven one yet you owe yourself a favor to go drive the new 2004 model. Bill P.S. Dont forget the subwoofer install

  • Nothing but Problems - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car in 2003. For the first two years, I loved it. Then, about a year ago, I started having problems. First, something started leaking. My warranty covered it. Then I broke down on a major road and had to get towed. The warranty also covered this. My car has stalled and I had to get towed (not covered), my air conditioning had to be recharged (not covered), then it had a leak (covered), my passenger side door stopped working (covered), etc. I would not recommend ever purchasing a used version of this car...it has too many problems.

  • Watch out for Certified USED-Jettas - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

My car is the reason why certified used cars should be included in the Lemon Law. But beware... they are NOT! With 3000 left on the certified warranty my car has been in the shop every month since purchase. Included..5 window regulator replacemnts, 2 Mass airflow meters, 3 transmission removals/adjustments, and 25 days in the shop within a year! what a P.O.S...

  • Investigate throughly before you buy! - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought the car at 33,000. With 3 months left on factory warranty. The first 2 months I had the car it was in the dealership for about a month in a half still having to pay the car note. There were problems with windows not wanting to roll down, rear passenger doors wouldnt open, sunroof would open by itself. One night I literally could not close sunroof by the switch and had to manually close it. It was problem after problem. Oh, one more thing the oil light comes on for no apparent reason even after Ive had an oil change. Hopefully if you purchase a VW and you have no hassle you picked a good apple.

Excellent car, will only drive volkswagons from now on. I love it!!!!

  • invoke the lemon law - 2003 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

the only thing worse than the car was the dealership. After 3000 miles the jetta misfires on all cylinders when you first start it up. The dealership refused to deal with this issue and i was forced to have VW buy the car back under the lemon law. In all, a huge, unsatisfying hassle. interior fabric hard to keep clean. trim deteriorates quickly. Dealership was extremely unhelpful and the VW customer service did not follow through or return calls. All i wanted was a car that was reliable when brand new. what is the point of a 4 year warranty when it sits in the shop the whole time.
