This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Good with Warranty - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I purchased my Jetta GLS new in 01. I loved the car for the first three years (while it was still covered under its factory warranty). Since then Ive had a turbo hose blow, brake switch go three times, replaced two timing belts, and had to replace several emissions sensors. I love the car, but HATE the repair cost. I cant go in for a repair for less than $250 (average $550). So unless you drive a TON the gas savings doesnt make up for the repair cost. Also, mechanics are few, even at the dealers, so you may have to wait for Bob to come back from vacation to get your car back. The timing belt is a $cow$, it wears out quick and then the car needs several adjustments to get it running right again. Overall this is a good car, I just wish I had gotten the extended waranty. I am looking to replace my car soon due to the high cost of repairs.

When gas went up to $1.75 a gallon in July 01, I purchased the Jetta GLS TDI. I got great gas milage right off the lot. I averaged in the first two years 32,000 miles. After five and a half years, I have over 129,000 miles. Over the lifespan I have averaged 49 - 52 mpg. If the maintenance is kept up and it is driven as any diesel should, long trips, you shouldnt have too many issues.

  • A super car for the money. Great value - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive already submitted a longer review on the Jetta in general. No other car maker offers such a combination of features for the price. How else could you get: sport suspension with top of the line touring tires gorgeous german BBS wheels 4 wheel disc ABS 6 airbags sport seats interior leather accoutrements 6 disc CD changer sunroof A fast turbo engine The list goes on and on! the audi A4 has the same features (plus leather) for almost 8000 more! Forget it and buy the Jetta. Ive had NO problems in 35000 miles!

When I purchased my 2001 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 it was fun to drive. Then I noticed I was not getting the fuel milage as advertised. I always had schedualed matenance done on this vehicle, but once one thing happend it was a domino effect. From O2 sensors to the transmission sliping, needing a new fuel pump and injector, this car has been a nightmare. The check engine light remains on, even after the work I did to it. The traction control and EPC lights wont disapear either. I only get 16 mpg. I might as well drive an SUV. I talk to people all of the time with this vehicle and they have similar problems.

  • Shes Been Good to me - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Certainly not my most reliable car, but it just has a lot of personality and its certainly been my favorite. MK IV VWs are famous for a handful of issues and mines had a few of them, all luckily covered under my CPO warranty since I bought it from a VW dealer. It was really love at first sight, a VR6 manual in silver with grey interior. The dealer let me take it out by myself and I was sold. I still love to drive it 4 years later and it still looks like new, aside from a couple of minor things. The issues? The infamous coilpack, MAF sensor, throttle body, and minor mechanical things like the latch on the armrest. VW recalled quite a few things before they ever failed on me.

This is a great car. I owned a Jetta about 10 years ago and fell in love with it all over again. The handling is an absolute dream. And its sure footedness in the snow is remarkable. Gas mileage is very good.

  • Great Reliable Car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

164,000 miles and running great. Reliable as can be. Good on gas, MPG has dropped slightly as the car aged but still gets 30mpg city easily. Massive trunk for a small car. Other than ground clearance it is a very good winter car. Only issue is an intermittent CEL related to an emissions issue that comes and goes. Dealer says its not worth chasing as the car runs perfect. Definitely will consider another Jetta or VW product.

  • The Best - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This wagon is simple the best when it come to german engineering and is the perfect sub for those who are not wanting to buy a mini van.
