This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

When I purchased "Molly", I was hooked! Great style, fun to drive, so much spunk and personality!!! I was obcessed with her... washing, waxing, birthday parties, "doctors appts." (scheduled maintenance.THEN.... my ignition coil blew, my computer system blew, my power windows broke, my air conditioning broke, my brake lights went out, my brake rotors rusted out, and my "premium BBS wheels"... are splitting and peeling (due to my climate I am told). However, I can replace for 560.00 EACH! Yeah, right. Did I mention this was all in 3(!) months and my warranty ran out?? Shes on her way now to the Honda dealership to find a new home!

Mine now has 47,500 miles on it. So far mine has been as reliable as you could hope for out of a car that only cost about $21k. My back rotors had to be replaced (right after my warranty was up). Chip it! What a difference it makes. There are not many cars that can hang with a chipped 1.8t between 0- 80 mph. Mine has not had any problems with the coils, windows, etc. "knock- knock-knock". Oh, yeah, the trim seems to be peeling off (the coating on the trim). Thats about the only thing about this car that oozes with cheapness.

I bought this car used with 60,000 miles on it. I fell in love with it right away! It drives wonderfully, great sound system, and the previous owners added some upgrades. Unfortunately after putting about 500 miles on it the check engine light came on and it kept popping itself out of gear. I took it to the dealer and found I needed a new transmission. They were completely helpful. They towed the car, diagnosed it, and put in a new tranny all for free. I still love this car, its fun to drive and nice to look at.

Considering trading for new GTI was going to look at those reviews and thought Id check the Jetta reviews first. Wow. Surprised by all the problems. Have the base GL with 5sp. Added alloys wheels and CD player. So far, knock on wood, no problems. Electrical, engine, windows, etc. all fine for last 2 yrs. Car has been just as reliable my last Acura. Been to the dealer only for 2 oil changes and to install CD player. Hope the GTI reviews are better or I may stick with what I have. Cool message board.

The car was great the first 2 years, but once the warranty ended so did the customer service. The past 4 months Ive had the air flow sensor, battery, oil pan, and catalytic converter replaced. Still waiting for the cat. after 1.5 months. The driver side window has fallen into the door.

  • Dont buy one - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had my car for 2 years and had nothing but problems. Within the first 4 months, the secondary air pump in the car went (but when I took it to another VW dealership they didnt know what I was talking about). Brakes went at 22,000 mi. Now the car is due back soon and they said that there is $1000 dollars worth of work that needs to be done because my car wont start. They said the air pump is done again and the relays are out and the battery is dead. I replaced the battery 2 weeks ago and it is dead again. Never again! Everyone I know that had one between 2000 to 2002 has had nothing but problems.

  • Really a good car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have 103,000 miles on my 2001 VW Jetta TDI since I bought it new. Ive followed all the maintenance recommendations, and only use Delvac 1 oil in it, which I change myself every 10,000 miles. Lifetime fuel economy is 46.8 mpg, and I drive it pretty hard. Ive owned a lot of cars in my life, and this is the most reliable car Ive had yet. As long as you buy the diesel fuel where the big rigs buy theirs, you will be OK in the winter.

I am very pleased with to car overall. The car has a smooth comfortable ride and is very dependable. The only thing I don,t like about the car is the fact that when we put our babys car seat in the back, you have to put the front seat up close to the steering wheel to fit it in.

  • LOVING MY VW - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

My VW was in a really bad accident 12/01. She had over 15,000 worth of damage. My cousin T-boned her, lucky the engine wasnt affected. After almost 4 months of repair. She is still in good condition. She runs just as good as when I bought her in 5/01. I havent had any major engine problems. I had to replace driver and passager window regulators, which I found out that was a common defect in VWs. I also had to replace my rear brakes at 28,000 miles which I thought was rare but I was told it was due to a braking feature. Overall I am happy with her.
