Overview & Reviews
For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.
- Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
- More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

Stay away from 2002 Jetta - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By Eric - January 4 - 5:26 amVW Jetta is not worth a dime. Problems since day 1. Water pump froze up causing timing belt to jump an d ruin engine. 1 Year later water pump froze up again. Constant electrical glitches and other mysterious items. Local VW dealer wont even look at if for less than $120. I would highly recommend staying away from these vehicles. They look nice; however, the quality is garbage.

Never Buy a VW again - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By crewdawg63 - January 2 - 2:16 pmBought this 5 years ago hoping to get 30 mpg for a long commute to a new job. Had a 1986 Jetta once upon a time that was GREAT, so figured Id get another one BIG mistake. Good: Heated seats are warm and cozy in the New England wintertime while waiting for the heater to warm up. Its small and fits in tiny parking garages well. The 2 rear seat reading lights are awesome for the kiddos they control their own light and it does not create a distracting glare for me. Lots of airbags. Good city car dont care if someone scratches nor dings it anymore. Its paid for. BAD: Build quality is horrible. Replaced 3 water pumps in the past 3 years-they seem to last just beyond the 12 month warranty, of course. Driving back from a long road trip up the east coast, all 4 brake rotors warped and I just got thru having all 4 brakes replaced (ouch!). The car wash ripped the radio antennae off the top. Dealer wants $1000 to remove/replace the headliner in order to fix. The heater on the drivers side blows air on my shins, so my toes continue to stay frozen no matter how hot the rest of the inside is. The exhaust just cracked behind the manifold, another $700 bill which had to be fixed in order to pass inspection. Now the automatic transmission and clutch is starting to act up, shifting hard and not dropping in to gear without banging on the shift lever. The auto door locks sometimes dont lock or unlock the back doors. The key fob doesnt lock/unlock unless Im within 3 ft of the car, even after repeated battery replacements. Rust is starting to show on the body, despite my attention to keeping the car clean. Im going to give this car to my 16 year old son as his project car. If he can keep it running, he has wheels. No matter how I drive and keep the car tuned up, the best I can get out of it is 25 mpg. Im going to go buy Toyota or Dodge truck. Might as well have a quality built hauler that people will get out of the way of Im tired of people pulling out in front of me when they see this POS coming.

VRoooooom - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By 2002GLIowner - December 30 - 10:00 amIve only put on about 1500 miles on my new GLI and so far the only annoyance is putting it away for the night--this thing is FUN to drive. Its engine pulls very well below 3000, and above that I defy anyone to not wind up with a big fat grin on their face. The 6 speed feels great with short, precise, shifts. The ride is sporty-smooth: you feel the road, but without being jarring in the least. The recaro seats are both supportive and comfortable, even after an entire day behind the wheel. The ergos are very impressive, right down to the slope on the armrest which leaves your hand aligned with the shift knob. I think Im in love.

great quality and fun to drive - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By shepp69 - December 17 - 2:00 amLove my jetta, its build quality is excellent with no problems. Interior looks good and heated seats are a must for leather seats in this part of the country. Quick with 1.8T engine. Going through tunnels you can really hear the turbo when it spools up. Great car no complaints. This is big because I have owned 13 cars in past 5 years, so far I plan on keeping it for awhile.

disappointed - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By Heidi A Silverson - December 6 - 7:06 pmthis is not a great review - car overheated and glitched after I had it for a couple months, light switch broke, cup holders suck (they drip on the a/c adaptor when I have my phone plug in), the car and insurance is overpriced, tiny back seat, gas mileage is not great and you have to use 91 octane gas. transmission slips and the dealer wont fix it. blah blah blah...

Horrible Design, Poor craftmanship - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By luga - October 7 - 2:00 amI bought this car two years ago, and sold it last Saturday. I wish I had saved myself the $9000 (!!!) it depreciated. This is a bad car, very cheaply made. Within the first two weeks, four plastic items simply fell from it. Add to this cheap quality the tiny back seat area, the lack of grip on pronounced curves, where you always have to end up correcting in too sudden a manner, and the completely dumb electronics (the boot closes itself automatically all the time, even with the car open; the e-key is horrible and unintuitive...),and a horrible operating manual, and you have a recipe to go mad.

Wicked nice car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By Germ luv - October 6 - 10:00 amI bought this car for my wife, and we both love it. 115 HP may seem little on paper, but this car has plenty of power. Only problem was when her key eneded up in the wash. Awesome quality German sedan

an honest review - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By effigy3 - September 12 - 10:00 amMy current car is GLX 5M and is my 5th VW. This car has wonderful road manners, is quiet, powerful, comfortable, and looks great. I must have a car that can handle itself on windy highway roads at speed limit plus velocities and this car delivers! The pick a line and go, the body sets itself and tracks wonderfully. It is great for road tips and as a grocery-getter too. Just keep rear seat occupants under 6 tall. I have had great luck with my VWs but have seen others with check engine light issues, window regulator failures, and small irritants. Could it be their maintenance practices? I dont know.
