This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Great Car! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had the car for a few months and I adore it. Fun to drive, easy on gas, nice interior and love the Monsoon sound system. So, far I havent had any major issues with the car as other Jetta owners in this forum have experienced. So far so good!

Only probloem ive had is with the dealership and some reliability issues. Other then that this is the best car ive ever driven! I havent test drove that BMW yet but it beats out anything in its price range. The quality of materials and build quality stand up against anything out thier. Plus the innovative feature and the creature comforts that no one knows about or notices untill you own the car are fantastick.

  • 165,000 miles strong - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

My husband and I got this car certified used in 2005. It had 60,000 miles on it at the time and was still in great shape. Its been 7 years and weve put an additional 100,000 miles on it. Its still going strong! Its a very comfortable car and very fun to drive. Sunroof and heated seats are great. The only thing you have to know before you buy a VW is they are more expensive to repair and maintain because they require special tools. Some mechanics have even refused to work on my car, saying they dont do VWs. The car is showing its age a bit now. It does eat oil in its latter years. As long as we keep oil full, the engines still great.

  • Worst Car Ever Owned - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

The Jetta ia a popular car and I know why. It is fun to drive. Good power. HOWEVER, he car has been in the garage being fixed more than it has been on the road. In two months over $2,000 of repairs and now they say the turbo is going bad - $2,500+ This car is immaculate and a piece of junk. Buyer beware - the turbo generates a lot of heat - causing lots of little problems. The engine will not last.

  • 136,000 Miles in Under Five Years - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I love my Volkswagen Jetta GL TDI. Ive made two trips to Portland, OR, 4,500 miles, and averaged over 51 mpg. I use cruise control and set it at about 65 mph. With effort, Ive gotten 44 mpg around town. With a tail wind, Ive gotten 55 mpg on selected trips of 600 miles. Its the only car Ive ever driven that goes over Raton Pass (CO / NM) with cruise control still working when I get to the top of the mountain.

  • Disappointed with the Jetta - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I previously owned a Jetta (1985), and thought it was the best car ever. I purchased another in 2001, and have been very disappointed. Although cute and okay to drive, the performance of the car is not as good as my last one. Maybe it is the inferior labor used in making it, but it is not as peppy as I remember.

  • Wolfsburgs not so great. - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Ive owned my Wolfsburg for a little over a year now and I wish Id never bought it in the first place. Ive had to take it into the dealership at least 9 times. Four times for the same thing!! My speakers rattle constantly REALLY loud and nobody can seem to fix the problem. I also have a thumping in my trunk coming from who knows what! I could go on and on, but I dont have room. Bottom line: "El producto de Mexico"! Ill never buy a VW again. My advise...buy American.

  • Great idea not realized - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

The excitment of owning my Jetta was short lived. In the 1.5 years that Ive owned my Jetta it has blown 2 fuses, the secondary air pump has gone out on it, the window brackets have broken 4 times and the windows have fallen inside the doors, the soft finish on the door handles and console inside the car have peeled off, the antenna had to be replaced, I had a braking malfunction, the sunroof wasnt working properly, the rear brakes went out within 24000 miles, electrical problems causing the brake lights not to work, sputtering upon starting the car, rough power surges while accelerating, and the interior shows every stain and picks up everything.

  • Beware of the service department - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The best all-around compact sedan for $20,000: Faster than most small cars, good fuel economy for such a powerful car, handles good but doesnt ride harsh, very good interior quality and ergonomics (besides the cupholders), and a long list of standard features. Of course nothings perfect: Quiet cabin helps rattles from the dashboard and doors sound more prevalent(door rattles can be dispatched by wrapping electrical tape around the "U" shaped door latch). Service departments are lousy. This has been verified by numerous owners around the country.

I Bought this car from an induvidual for 13K , with 47,000 miles on it . The car was in outstanding condition . Having heard the horror stories of reliability , I purchased a 4 year Extended Warrenty with unlimited miles. After six months Ive not had any troubles what so ever . The cup holders do block the CD player ,the break pedal sits just a hair to high , and on uneven roads the dash around the cupholder rattle the slightest bit . The car is a blast to drive , and the interior is beautiful . The inerior is on par with the Audis and BMWs Ive seen . The Leather Seats are beautiful . Braking is great. I get 24\25 MPG on the hwy , and 19\21 in down , thats with correct tire pressure .
