For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Clutch nightmare - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By alcent - July 20 - 10:00 amCar is pretty nice but beware of clutch on standard tranmission. I had several manual transmission cars so I know how to drive a standard. But I was told by Momentum that my clutch was burned out at 23000 miles. Bull.. It is not covered under warranty and I had to shell out $1800.00. I am getting rid of my Jetta VR6 as soon as I can. I tell all my friends DO NOT VOLKSWAGON!

Love it! / Hate it! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By dirtwoman65 - July 16 - 4:53 pmI love my Jetta...however, I burn 1 qt. of oil every 1,000 miles. This is rediculous. Interior plastic is peeling, have had many electrical problems, including brake-relay switch. The VW dealership is a scam. They were aware of this problem and wanted to charge full cost for diagnostics to "find" the problem (which turned out to be a "recall") I will not buy another VW simply because of the dealership.

By NotABimmer - July 6 - 10:00 amMy 01 Wolfie has also experienced problems with squeeks and rattles pretty much from day one. Dealer tried, couldnt fixem. Oddly enough, they have slowly gone away now. With 15000 hard miles the car seems to be getting better. Engine runs strong,tranny nice and tight, suspension still tight, but not harsh. The remote trunk release failed at 10000, but the dealer fixed it under warranty. No other problems to report. Basically, a really fun car, but still has the "econo-box" feel. It is not an expensive car, and it should not be expected to make you feel like it is. It doesnt. Only thing in common with my BMW is white paint.

Love my TDI - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Diesel Fitter - June 22 - 6:23 pmIve owned my TDI since July of 2000. It was purchased specifically for the gas mileage and I have not been disappointed. We have a condo in St. Augustine, FL and I made it there from my house in southern NJ on a tank and a half of fuel ... 52 MPG. I never get less than 42 MPG with this car. Only problems with this car have been the front windows suddenly falling into the door (recall), a mass air sensor going (recall), and this car eats brake light bulbs. Unlike a lot of the reviews I think the front cup holders are great and was disappointed that the new Jetta deleted them along with the adjustable armrest. Looking forward to buying a new Jetta Sportwagen TDI.

By maxine8100 - May 2 - 10:00 amI love the Jettas exterior design, but wish I had done my research before I bought one! Its nice outside, cramped inside. My friends have similar size cars and seem to have much more room. The worst problem is that my Wolfsburg is always in the shop. Every week it seems like something breaks, and I lose the use of my car for days and pay through the nose for repairs. This car is horribly built. Also, it is called a "turbo" but only has 150 hp. What is up with that, VW? Its cute but itll cost you. I wish I had never bought one

A small performance sedan value - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Sheep - April 17 - 2:00 amExcellent performance when chipped. Also increases gas mileage if you use the greatly enhanced torque to your advantage. The styling is very Euro: conservative yet fresh. Everything works in the car well. Controls well placed. Driving position is excellent. Transmission is very smooth and very precise if upgrade the shifter, which I did. I bought the car with the intention of making it into a hardcore sporty sedan with a minimum investment and it has delivered in spades! Fit and finish is superb for a car in this class; the interior will shame any Asian or American car in this category.

Great Car with some squeaks and rattles - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By spiral107 - April 13 - 2:00 amI have put over 60,000 miles on my Jetta and I still love it. It has been a great car. My main issue was with the build quailty. It seems like there were a lot of small issues originally and I have had squeaks and rattles the entire time, and they come and go through the years. My window went out, but that was a recall, and my rear brakes did need to be replaced at about 30k, so I guess i did notice what the majority of people did, but i have not had O2 sensor or ignition coil problems ( although the ignition coils were a recall too) I love it, its a great car to drive. I would buy another one, although I think i would fight for an extended warranty.
