This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Jetta 01 diesel - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

It took six months to delivery due to the US limit on imported diesel engines: an unfair conflict with fuel efficiency which provided a tax rebate on our 1981 diesel Rabbit (sold in 95) Performance has been excellent; 48-50 mpg on cross-country trips with AC, 75mph. Two equipment notices for for free replacement of parts. Oil changes and such at dealer very expensive unless you provide your own oil/other. Overall dealer mechanical work so-so. Service desk personnel very helpful.

  • Decent for my standards - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is remarkable quick for being a 4 banger. I was equally impressed by the list of standard features with this model. Being a single man, I did not care about backseat room, until I had to sit back there! There was less room than my 2dr Accord Coupe! But the car really proved itself to me when I rear ended a brand new Mercedes, the airbags werent pleasant (but what ones are?) however I was highly impressed by the way it held up. The damage was $10,000+ and would have surely totaled my Honda had I been driving it. After the car was fixed it wasnt the same (are they ever?) so I traded up to a 2002 VW Passat (will review that one too)

  • Caveat Emptor/Buyer Beware - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is cute and the body feels "durable." However, the engine was purposefully designed to ONLY be repaired by VW dealership, as most smaller repair shops never have the specific parts in stock, and always find it difficult to get the parts from VW. The "check engine" light continuously lighted up (usually for no reason, causing me unnecessary trips to VW). The "mass air flow sensor" failed at least 8 times. The radiator had to be replaced ($680). The water pump and related fans had to be replaced ($800+). Spark plugs "misfired" and had to be replaced ($950). Engine hoses and pipes burst because they melted ($450). I could go on and on.

  • Two years later, no problems - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Here I am, 72,000 miles later, and my maintenance has been light bulbs, oil changes and new tires. This thing is still on the original brake pads. When they do finally decide to wear, Im getting the exact same brand. I have had absolutely no troubles. Ive been bad--Ive yet to take the car for its scheduled maintenance. So far, it hasnt punished me for my neglect. One bad thing--the car burns oil. Lots of it. Im putting in a quart or more every 2,500 miles. I chalk that up to my lead foot on the turnpike, but its the only car Ive ever had that issue with. Still, its a great car and it looks fantastic.

  • I also love my car and hate the dealer - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This was the first car I purchased on my own. I did the research and I felt strong negotiating with the dealer. I have been loyal to the dealer, until I found another mechanic who offered a second opinion on a pricey repair. He taught me about how I was getting ripped off. The new mechanic educated me, showing me the parts and how they worked. He treated me like I actually had a brain. The dealer always presents problems - every time I went in for routine maintenance - as if it always was urgent and threatened my safety. I have stopped going to the dealer. Had I been treated as if I had a brain I might still be going there.

  • Great mileage with no problems - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This car is awesome. It gets phenomenal mileage (it is a diesel) at 50-60 mpg depending on driving conditions, a/c useage, etc. It handles well, it is quiet (you can only slightly hear the diesel engine at idle), has awesome storage capacity with the backseat folded down and has a great sound system. 40,500 miles so far and not 1 problem

  • Nice and fun to drive! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Got my Jetta in Jan/04 with 57000 miles on the clock. It has been a new driving experience. Its incredible how the vr6 feels. Get the 5-speed to really enjoy this machine. GLX package is the best with all the options you have in a top of the line European car. I have put 45000 miles with no problems at all, just regular maintenance, replaced the tires at 68k and the shocks/struts @ 95k. Replaced water pump @ 80k (extra warranty covered it). No problems whatsoever.

  • Love my Jetta!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Cant say enough good things about my Jetta. Cool white, tinted windows, 17inch rims and still getting complements when i go out. After reading about all the major problems with other jettas makes my jetta look like a keeper. The only minor problem was the wood trim next to the radio fell off the first month. They replaced it and nothing since. Dont plan on buying another jetta soon because I plan on having this car forever.
