This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Nice Ride - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

My Jetta is great, minus a few things here and there but I love it. Its faster than I had expected, showing me that I could surpass many higher end cars, it has a nice kick to it. I havent had any engine trouble but I did by it used and havent had it for too long so we shall see. I love a lot of details in the interior like the lights in the dash, the stereo system, sunroof, and heated seats. Unfortunately, it was poorly built Im finding out. The interior rubber-like paint peels off and I have now just peeled it all off and it looks better. I learned quickly not too pull up on a curb because it basically pulls your bumper off which was surprising to me. Other than that though, I love it!

I purchased a VW Wolfsburg back in 2001 after a very good experience with an older Jetta. The 2001 Jetta has been nothing but problems. Nother major went out but very soon after the 2 year warrenty expired my cruise control went out, mechanical problems, breaks went out, not to mention a recall that fixed a problem. When I got my breaks fixed I asked why they went out so soon. The mechanic said when the vehicle was assembled, the breaks were not put in right. As far as the cruise control, I was told that it was a junk part that was assembled (but I still needed to pay for it because it was not under warrenty).

  • Fun to drive, drag to fix - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I owned a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta, my friend owned one and my parents, and wife had a VW Beetle. All were fantastic to drive, super peppy. However, in the five years I owned it, the check engine light was off for only five months. Something was always wrong. Only the coil recall made it not driveable, but all of the issues were annoying. Its brakes needed replacement after 15,000 miles. Its arm rest broke two times once by a valet and once by friend (one screw is a dumb design). This car has a high clearence compared to Hondas. My wifes 02 Beetle 1.8T also had all same engine problems and more. The Jetta is expensive to fix. I spent $900 fixing it once only to have check engine come back on three weeks later. All that and on lease turn in they still charge you $250 for check engine light that is never off.

I got in to my first car accident 16 days after I bought my first Jetta in Sept 2000. It was totaled and I am convinced saved my life. On the other hand, my new VW jetta (Oct.2000) drives like a dream but I have been hassled w/ the drivers seat cable breaking, the arm rest lock breaking, the engine light randomly coming on and dealing w/ a service team that thinks you have all day & every day to spend with them by turning what should be one visit into two. Due to these dumb things happening I am about to drop $1350 for the extended warranty (2001 models get the 24000mi or 2yr jippy warranty).

Very dissapointed...Window rotors have been replaced 5 times; windows leak; moon roof has plastic parts falling off; recalled for engine coil; uncomfortable back seats; center console broke...

This car is so much fun to drive, and easy to learn on. Parts are a bit expensive, but it hasnt really broken down. One tail light keeps going out, but thats about it. This is an excellent car and I love the turbo. The only problem I have is that it requires premium gas, which is more expensive than diesel. I only get around 22-26 MPG, so I would recommend getting a TDI considering gas prices right now. Also, it gets dents and scratches very easily (like from dogs jumping up). Overall, this is a great car.

  • There comes a time when you must let go - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive owned this vehicle the last 27 months and put about 40,000 miles on it from my last two years at college. It was Certified Pre-Owned when I bought it, and now it has close to 90,000 miles. Its a great road tripping/commuting car, fun to drive, but as the miles piled up, the costs to maintain it grew. From my records, every 5,000 miles I put on it, it needed about $1,000 in service (parts and labor). Over the last three months, Ive put less than 3,000 miles on it yet pumped close to $2,000 into it, just to maintain it. This is my third and final Jetta, and although I love VWs, I would suggest to buy them new, never used because once they get to 70,000 miles, something is always wrong. 2007 Rabbit here we come!

The engine, suspension and transmission have been excellent. The brakes as well as the fit and finish have been a constant source of aggrevation. Although properly cared for the supposed quality BBS rims have been CRAP! Rattles in the speaker area, faulty rotors and rims that pit/clear coat failure make me a rather proturbed owner. After ditching a 99 Beetle for similar reasons, this one will follow shortly. My days with Volkswagen have come to an end.

  • Good year for the Jetta - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I never would have thought about buying a foreign vehicle until my bf got me psyched about the idea of owning one. We just went to some random dealership and I was so happy when we test drove this. Ive had it almost a yr now with no problems. Its got over 96,000 miles on it and is still a young one. I plan on keeping this vehicle for as long as I can.

My wife and I just bought the 2001 Jetta a couple days ago. Its really her car more than it is mine. So far we love the power of the turbo. The leather is pretty comfortable and the exterior looks really sharp. We love the sunroof and the heated seats.
