This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Fun, Comfortable, and Economical - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive got 145,000 miles on the car and have had to spend a fair amount of money on service. Ive replaced the glow plugs and had the intake manifold cleaned when it plugged with carbon. Ive also replaced the airflow sensor twice. So it hasnt been trouble-free, but its within acceptable limits. The cost of ownership is about what you would have with a trouble free car getting about 35 mpg, but Id still buy it again. I love the way it drives and the torque of the TDI engine. It sure doesnt drive like a 44-49 mpg car! It pulls like a big V6 up to about 3,000 rpm. It is great for a sole commuter or a traveling couple.

  • Good Car I like it - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Bought my car for 3000 less than sticker at a tent sale. I got a good deal for the money I spent. Good Points -- Performance, no Maintenance (only scheduled) in 30000 miles, handling is great and has good gas mileage. Bad Points -- the cloth on the seats is horrible ( they need to rethink this)

  • Fun but unreliable - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Im at 117,000 miles and and getting ready to trade in for a Honda. The MIL is on right now because of a bad coolant sensor, a bad 02 sensor and a bad catalytic converter. The heater core also has a hole in it, so the car smells like anti-freeze if I turn the heat on. I hope the dealer doesnt take it for a drive before proposing a trade in value. I figure Ive put about $10k into the car on repairs over the years, with only about $2k being normal scheduled maintenance. That includes a few new rims and tires because it does not handle pot holes too well! It is fun to drive though, so I will miss that after the trade in.

  • Rattle and HUMMMM - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Overall this is a very well designed and built car. For the money it feels and drives like a more expensive car. However, my car suffered from door rattles over bumps which the dealer was able to fix after two attempts. WIND NOISE is a problem the dealer has not been able to fix. The drivers door does not seal properly agains the frame of the car causing excessive wind noise above 50 mph. Also, the dashboard is not properly aligned between the doors resulting in a considerable gap between the drivers door and the dash. CHECK FOR THESE TYPES OF PROBLEMS BEFORE BUYING.

  • My service manager knows me by name - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

5 hrs.after pick up from dealer, sunroof motor quit. 1 month later strange creaking/groaning noise from front end Dealer found that "something" was missing in right strut Check engine light comes on at 11 months followed by speedo going nuts List is too long on "items" replaced by dealer. 1 month later, same issue again, This time, different items replaced, told that this will correct the issue. 7 days after picking up the car, my favorite light comes on again " check engine" Just dropped off the car today the service manager....tells me it is one of the oxygen sensors. This is my 6th Volkswagen, and my last.

  • Poor quality - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I got this 2001 Jetta in 2004. Very loud, poor power. Hard to start until I cleaned out a part of an emission(eat your own exhaust) part. Just to get to the alternator is over $200 in labor, and labor to replace the alternator belt is $107, very hard to get to. IF this car would not break down so much, it would be good, 45-55MPG. I thought I would save a lot of money with this good gas mileage, but how much gas can you buy with a $1200 repair bill? I have not saved any money, and it is not dependable, I do not trust this car enough to drive it cross country.

  • Just Short of A+ - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

For the most part, Ive enjoyed my WBE very much. Yes, the power window clips died and had to be replaced. And Im waiting for the ignition coils to be recalled. But otherwise the car has been comfortable, fun to drive, and a pleasant experience. I especially like the Fitzgerald Automall dealership. One note -- DO NOT get the beige interior (my only mistake). It shows stains, dirt, etc too easily.

  • Bad Car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought my car in Aug of 2004 and have had it now for about 7 months. The car has been in and out of the shop about 10 times and for the most serious replacing the engine. It was a certified vehicle and everything was taken care of but I have missed so much work because of this car I would not suggest the Jetta to anyone looking to buy a car!!!!

What an awesome car! People often underestimate the power of this little car, but on the highway, this car is unbeatable. The interior is fantastically furnished and equipped and the seats are supportive without being constrictive. The classic lines of the Jetta are perfectly accented by the subtle yet classy BBS RXIIs on which the vehicle rides. Recently, an older gentleman in a Jaguar complimented on the classiness of my car, quite the compliment coming from someone with clearly refined tastes.

  • WARNING!! DONT BUY THIS CAR!!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

WOW, what a piece of garbage. I read the reviews before buying this piece of trash, but I thought, "eh, let me see for myself.." Im an idiot for doing this. What havent I replaced in this lemon, besides the frame and the engine? I bought the car for $3k with rusty fenders & a rusty chipped hood. Replaced both fenders & hood. It had some small dings, but no rust after that. I replaced the battery $210 ! I replaced the starter, coolant expansion tank, & a few other parts. I had invested a total of $1,728. I almost immediately but it back up for sale because is was beyond annoying to keep fixing little things. My wife hated when I chose to drive it over our other cars....The interior smell is atrocious, it smelled like a melted crayon constantly-- plus the interior is beyond cheaply constructed, which, if you happen to brush against, will smudge and ruin your clothes. The interior plastics were seriously made out to the strength of styrofoam cups. Though, peppy & fun to drive, do yourself a favor DONT BUY THIS CAR! I finally sold this car yesterday for $5k after trying for over 4 months! Making a $272 profit! I cant believe I didnt loose my [non-permissible content removed] on this car. After counting the cash, and after the kid left, my wife and I were literally dancing!
