This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • The Car Sucks - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Ive always wanted a jetta so of course my I had to get a jetta. The first year was great. By the time the second year came the problems just would not stop. Theres this gross stuff coming from the door that hardens. Theres obviously something wrong with my transmission and it chuckles backwards at times. Dealership insists theres nothing wrong with it everytime. Each snowstorm the guy has issues with traction even after changing to brand new tires. The velour seats are horrible with everything sticking to it. I cant wait till I get rid of this car.

First time owner of VW product. Will continue to purchase more. I am very impressed with quality and performance. Wish they had glx vr6 for 03, but discontinued.

This is the best car Ive owned. There were a few initial ticks, child window lock broken, seat fold-down retainers broken. I expect a couple issues with a new car though, and these were minor and taken care of right away. If power is your thing, might want to step up to the 1.8T or the VR6, but I find the 2.0 to be adequate for urban and interstate.

  • Not a bad car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this older car to get around town and to go back and forth from the train station mainly. Its cute and fun to drive, but just a couple of months after purchasing needed work, which the mechanics I took it to had trouble spotting. Getting it fixed has been a hassle, but thats often the case with any car.

Well, I love how this car drives, feels and performs... that is when it is not at the dealership. This car has been at the shop (Gene Messer VW) at least 15 times since it was purchased a little over two years ago. One time they had the car for six weeks because of the check engine light. For some reason, it always seems like there are several things wrong. Yikes, it is by far the worst car I have ever owned. Some problems include: Check engine light, airbag light, turbo, paint, rattles and other things.... Also, the service department has the worst setup I have ever seen. I really do think that these people have no idea how to work on their cars

Attended a seminar where J Mays, the designer for Audi & VW cars showed the passion that went into the design of the Jetta (and the awesome switchblade key) and decided to get one. The car has tremendous power and good handling except for the occasional torque steer from the heavy VR6. Interior details are magnificient and one just has to see them to realize that someone spent time thinking about it. It is truly a drivers car.

  • 2.5 Year Evaluation of Manual TDI GLS 01 - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had the car during 2 St. Louis winters. Both times the fuel has frozen. The first year I didnt use any diesel additive. The 2nd yr I used plenty, but it still failed. The dealer told me that it was bad fuel, luckily I bought the fuel from Quik Trip and the guarantee there fuel. They paid for it. So I am still unsure about the condensate theory. Now (60000) it needs a timing belt, new rear brakes, and it looses power at 2400 RPMs. I inquired at the dealer the cost Timing Belt=500.00, Power problem =300.00 to 1200.00. I am disappointed at the high cost to maintain this $21,000 vehicle. I love the performance, driving, and styling of the Jetta.

This has to be the best car Ive ever owned. Its fun to drive and handles very good. Of coarse, I opted for the 17" low profile tires with the sport suspension! And its a very safe car! 5 out of 5 Stars. Only thing, interior lights burnt out within first year! Other then that, great car.

  • Gotta love it! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I was car shopping for 2 months and couldnt find anything. Until I test drove this car. I never before had an adrenaline rush driving a car. I told myself I would never buy a manual but I had to make an exception. It shifts so smoothly that it feels like an automatic. Its simply awesome. The interior feels like a BMW interior.

  • The Money Pit - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Where do I begin...Lets start with the peeling paint on the hood and roof. Not exactly showroom quality and its only two years old. I have replaced the rear brakes and calipers two times in the past 36K miles. My Maxima is going on 40K miles on the original brakes! Tail lights seem to burn out bulbs regularly to the point where I actually have a supply in the trunk and the brakes sound like a fog horn when backing up. According to two dealerships..."this is just how it is!" The pads are dragging against the rotors and there is no way to prevent it....right! What else..oh yeah..the chronic ignition coil failure and that horrible turbo lag.
