This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • 2002 Wagon rocks! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Bought a 2002 Jetta wagon in Oct 2001 and I love the car. I got the 2.0 liter 5-speed manual transmission and this car has no problems accelerating with one person. The cornering is excellent and the ride feels like a sports car. The interior looks and feels great (esp. at night). Small size makes parking easy. The wagon gives you almost as much cargo space as a small SUV with much better gas mileage.

Awesome car! Although Ive driven a lot of cars, this is the first that Ive owned, and Im thrilled. Great pickup at lower speeds, tight handling, and really good-looking.

  • Anyone need a transmition? - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

22,000 miles and we are on the 3rd transmition. It has been in the shop for a total of 27 days over the past two years.

  • If I knew - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

This is a great car in general, but I would strongly advised you of some major problems. Take the leather interior, the black material seats will leave you spending hours a week tring to remove the dust that will accumulate on it, and it is extremely hard to remove. Also pay the extra for the 1.8 liter or TDI or even better VR6 cause the regular model is slow, slow slow!!! You will be disapointed it has no power. If I would have to do it all over I would much rather spend that money or less on other models, like acura or nissan ... But the comfort, the cheap fuel and the style still makes it worht buying!

  • Good When It Works, Which is 10% of the Time - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This car is great when it works. It has good handling, and a nice feel, but it is the biggest pile of junk I have ever owned. I have spent more money in one year on repairs than all the other cars I have owned put together. I will never buy another and am trying to get rid of it. So dont ever buy a VW! Most people I have talked to have similar experiences.

  • Buyer beware ! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Bought our Jetta on 10/2000 , a shiny black one with beige interior, it was beautiful! After the honeymoon was over ( about 10,000 miles ) reality set in. This car is not reliable or fun to live with ! The cloth they use for the interior picks up anything and everything and always looks dirty, plus its impossible to clean. The engine is peppy at low speed but on the highway it always sounds like it needs to be up-shifted to a higher gear. The doors leak out a gooey mess all over the rocker panels in hot weather. Both front side windows fell down inside the doors ( one twice so far ). The turn signals quit working at 30,000 miles ( new flasher @ $120 ).

  • Great little car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This 2001 just keeps geting better, averaging 46+mpg of diesel and loving every mile. THe best part is the dealer service department. relatively few problems, but my next car will definitely come from Harper. I also have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer that cost twice what this car did and they (Chevy) have convinced me to buy VW next time with their attitude.

  • fun to drive! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I use to own a 2003 Honda Civic but this 2001 Volkswagen owns it! to my surprise when I had my foot on the accelerator it was fast! and I could surpass any cars even the high end cars. Im also glad for the fact that the brakes are fast and sensitive. I didnt expect much from it and now I enjoy riding it so much! Since I just bought this car, Im still figuring out some stuff to it, because EVERYTHING is automatic even to the fact that almost everything has buttons to it! Another thing thats great about this car, is the comfort of it, when youre in it, its like youre sitting in an SUV because the seats are so elevated.

  • please beware - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

i purchased a 2001 jetta gls 2.0 and this has been the worst car i have purchased. do not get stuck in the vw trap. a week after buying it with 98000 miles the transmission started tweaking and is costing me roughly 2900 just to replace without the fact that its starting to get a lifter tick that was estimated $1200. it is a money sucking trap. the interior is nice but material is junk. electric problems are guaranteed lol... ive never driven a car that runs at 4000 rpms on the highway.. that is insane dumb.. i am selling as is or taking it to the junkyard and buying myself a reliable honda!

  • Gem of a car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

It has been an extremely powerful car, still has the fastest pickup of many other cars I have tried. Extremely lovable possession
