This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • It is so much fun - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I have had more powerful and bigger cars but none that are more fun. Last summer, I traded in my 1998 Maxima SE for a Jetta, Wolfsburg edition. It was a great decision. The drive of the Jetta is so responsive, tight and perky. My favorite car previous to this one was my 1998 Jetta. This has many more creature comforts but what a car and what a drive!

  • We love our 2001 GLX VR6 - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

The car is solid and handles very well. The VR6 has plenty of power but seems to really come on-line at higher speeds and RPMs. The leather interior is of superior quality and the Monsoon stereo really cranks and has many features. The sport package really helps the car handle well even at speeds in excess of 100 mph and the 17" wheels really set off the appearance and stance of the car. This car has been often mistaken for a BMW with good reason and is a cousin of the Audi A-4.

  • I got a great one!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

Like other reviewers, I had a window clip break so that I could not roll up my window. The local VW dealer, from whom I did not buy the car, replaced it immediately as well as the other window which had not broken, they were extremely helpful. I also had the car not start one time shortly after purchasing, but it turned out to be a problem with the key fob, also fixed free of charge. I have read all the bad reviews, but I have been extremely happy with this car. I have driven it tons and I love it. I did also find however that you need to keep an eye on the oil, it does need about a quart every 1k.

  • Love this little car! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I got this lovely little VW eight years ago after driving an old model Ford Explorer and I loved the change! The Jetta has been so reliable and comfortable. Not to mention much better in gas mileage. The console is very convenient with all knobs and buttons within an easy hands reach. Very comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. Not to mention a HUGE trunk for such a small car. Very well crafted and sturdy. I always felt safe driving her. In almost eight years, she only was in the shop once for a sensor failure. With punctual oil changes and maintanence, the Jetta will run like new for a loooong time!

  • Happily Ever After... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

I Have found my 2001 Jetta GLS TDI to be an absolute joy to drive. Granted, I treat it with care and get the recommended service as suggested in the manual. It has never failed me not even in cold midwestern winters. The 49-50 miles per gallon was a strong reason for choosing the TDI. I had previously heard of the old dreaded "deisel dogs", but the turbo 1.9L diesel engine delivers a peppy and sufficient acceleration. Im constantly receiving compliments on its appearance and ride. Its without a doubt, the best car I have ever had the pleasure of owning! Give it a try.

Since I bought this car, I have had a lot of fun driving it. It is very good on gas as opposed to the 2.0L model. It has lots of power and great handling. I wouldnt trade it for anything else....well maybe a 2002 model because its got more power.

  • Perfect Balance between Sport & Comfort - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I got my Jetta because I wanted a car that would be comfortable and fun to drive on my 70-mile round trip highway commute, but would also be a good car to toss around on back roads on the weekend. For me its suspension and ride are the perfect balance between being sporty and comfortable. The turbocharged engine is also a great design, giving smooth, ample power and good fuel economy. I dont mind the small rear seat area because I seldom carry more than 1 passenger & the short wheelbase makes for better handling.

  • A Nice Ride - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta

My Jetta GL has 128,000 miles on it now and still has the original front brakes, exhaust system and clutch. The 2.0 liter 4 gets excellent gas mileage and the 5 speed manual trans is fun to use. I take it to the dealer for servicing every 5000 miles. Maintenance is expensive but well worth it. This car has been trouble free and I hope to get at least 300,000 miles before letting her go. Even tho the 2.0 is not a muscular engine it is very smooth. This cars handling is tight and very maneuverable.

  • Great commuter car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

In the first year I was driving 120 miles per day and was getting between 50-55 mpg. My commute lessened considerably, and now Im only getting mid 40s, though on longer trips its back up around 50. While the TDI doesnt have quite as much pep as a 1.8T or a V6, its still sportier than many other "economy" commuter vehicles. Takes a little bit longer to start when its below zero, but have never had it fail to start. Only one mechanical issue related the glowplugs that was misdiagnosed at first, but then fixed properly on a subsequent visit. I wholeheartedly recommend this car to anyone who has to drive any sort of distance.

  • Great German Wagon - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This car replaced a 2000 Beetle (I loved the Beetle but needed more useful cargo space). It has very few negatives: its mileage isnt great. Ive used regular gas for three years. The mpg actually improved from when I used super. It has no knocks or pings. I had a problem with the coolant system when I moved to the desert. The coolant evaporates in this intense heat. Now, the positives: the car is great. Its handling after six years is still crisp and responsive. Its fit / finish are excellent. Even using regular gas the acceleration is excellent. I also have a 04 Mustang Convertible. My Jetta wagon is so much more fun to drive. I love this car.
