This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Pros:
  • Solid build quality, rich interior materials, loads of features, available turbo and V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Cookie-cutter Euro-copy sheet metal, bigger standard-features list means bigger base price.

  • Nice Car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

In Returning from Europe I was searching for a new dependable fuel saving small car. First choice was the 80 MPG VW Lupo, not available in the US! Not many choices to choose from in the U.S. when it comes to fuel saving cars. I looked at cheaper makes, bragging in their adverts of getting 30 MPG. I don’t consider this very good for a 4 cyl. I settled for the Jetta TDI. This is a nice car I still avg 48 MPG. Hwy 65 MPH its around 55 MPG. I have had 3 problems; 1st the pass. window came un attached. 2nd & 3rd the Turbo and Mass air flow had to be replaced. All fixed by warrenty. Current 70000 mi.

  • 2001 Jetta - Coil Ignition resolved - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I Always wanted a Jetta, for its known reliability and safety. However, I discovered how it is not so reliable, Ive had multiple sensors go bad, the cat went bad along with the alternator and now the coil Ignition went bad. If your VW has issues when starting in the rain, engine light goes crazy the car bucks and feels like it wants to stall it is the ignition coil. Just got a quote from the dealer 525. to fix. I have currently 112K miles on it, young for a VW I think to have so many issues, I drove a Geo Storm Prior and sold it with 164K and never had so many issues. Luckily a lot of the stuff was cover under warranty at first.. but seems like a money pit, whats next?

  • Fun car, hate the check engine light - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought my Jetta two months ago and have put about 2000 miles on it, it had 93000 when I bought it. I love the looks of the car and the features are second to none in the small car realm, the heated leather, sunroof, radio controls on the steering column, its very fun to drive and fairly economical, it gets around 31 mpg, my only complaint is the check engine light, no matter how many repairs, it will not go off and stay off. $530 later Ive decided to let it be on. Sometimes I get so mad about it but then I drive the car and remember why I love it, its fun to drive, more classy than civic or corolla... did I mention its fun to drive?

  • Unreliable but fun and sexy - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This car is fun to drive, sophisticated in exterior styling, very responsive and quick acceleration. BUT Ive been stranded on a dark road at night one time by an indeterminate electrical problem; limped home on a very hot day with my elderly parents along (needed a NEW transmission that time); had the ignition coils replaced within 500 miles of going out of warrenty (the dealer didnt charge); and now the trouble light is on again.

  • Rattles!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I cant stop all the rattles! The instrument panel is the worst followed closely by the drivers door and then the rear door tweeter mounts. Now the A/C control backlight has burnt out. 8 months and instrumentlights are burning out? AND the dealer said that the vibration I feel on the highway during acceleration is an inner CV joint starting to fail! I traded a 7yr old BMW with less issues than this car. If you want an aftermarket stereo, dont get the Monsoon! And if you decide you want to pull out your radio, be prepared to go to the dealer to reset your alarm. Too many issues, for such a new car, especially for the price. Too bad I am so upside down or it would be GONE!

  • Avoid it...or pay... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is my second VW Jetta. Traded my 98 Jetta GT. In fact, Ive never owned any other car but a VW! I love this car, but...nothing but problems. Heres the "brief" list: 335 miles - dash rattles, door rattles. 2,400 - glove box light 24,301 - dash lights 26,250 - both front window regulators 32,000 - two wheel bearings 36,506 - brake light switch and coil pack. 42,000 - BBS wheels pitted. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT BUY ANYTHING MADE IN MEXICO. This is a car I have babied since day one! I called vw to complain, and they could care less. NEVER AGAIN VW...NEVER! Hello Honda Accord.

  • Great Car! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I bought this car used with 50,000 miles on it. It has been a great car. The check engine light was on at the dealer, but they fixed it before I took possession, it has been great ever since. (made it easier to negotiate price anyway:) ). The only major problem so far was the lower torque strut. It stripped a bolt and broke the other, but it wasnt hard to fix. The interior rubber coating was a bad idea, but not hard to remedy with a trim kit. All in all a great car in all the important areas; performance, general good looks, handling, general reliability. The handling doe require some tuning to limit body roll.

  • Lint Trap!!! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I came on this to see if everyone with this car had the same problems and they sure did. My oil is gone literally every 1000 miles...and they tell me thats normal...ya ok. my passenger windown just fell into the side door shattering...that was common so they fixed both windows no problem but still inconvenience...the seats are embarrassing since it looks like i got into a fight with a cat and it won (winter sweaters) lint all over the car and vacuum doesnt pick it up (stuck)...on a positive note it is excellent on gas and no major mechanical problems:-)oh almost forgot within a yr of having the car i need new rotters and pads!

  • Good car, with the right dealer..... - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have 95,000 miles on my 2001 Jetta TDI. I bought it with 13,000 miles on it about 3 years ago because I wanted a comfortable car with great mileage as I am in the auto wholesaling business. The TDI delivers on these primary points. Handling and performance are great, the TDI while short on HP delivers great torque and acceleration for most situations. I am averaging 42 mpg consistently with the automatic transmission in combined (mostly highway) driving. I buy and sell up to 50 used vehicles a month, mostly late model and of all the Jetta models the TDI is tops for resale in this regard.
