never buying a VW again - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By no more vws - May 21 - 5:56 amcar ran well for about a year before everything went wrong. Bought with 76,000 now has 130,000 miles Muffler fell off about 7 times resulting in lots of repair costs. When everything seemed ok the distributor went and needed new wires. After that the spark plugs had a problem resulting in gas killing my catalytic convertor and o2 sensors that =$1,200 worth of repairs. Had steering problems and a few days ago the clutch broke and stuck to the floor. Quick fix for about $200 bucks but warned that the clutch will go very soon. Body is rusting faster and faster where it is to the point that you cannot even jack the car up without the body crumbling. Replacing car ASAP and never buying VW again

Just a fun little car! - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By cailin - March 30 - 2:00 amThis 98 Jetta is my first ever car. As I purchased this vehicle "late in life", and did not drive at all until a year ago, I dont have anything to compare this car to. BUT, it is fun to drive and definitely has a lot of pep. Not the best on gas mileage, but then I dont drive to work, and mine does have 6 cylinders (Vroom-vroom!). Parts can be pricy, so its good that VWs have a good reliability rating. I bought this car used and had I done more research, would have preferred a new (w/warranty) car. A good, solid (and well-sealed) car.

Cute but not worth it . . . - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By JettaGirl ?? - March 25 - 10:00 amI bought my 1998 Jetta as my first brand new car. There are lights in my dash that NEVER worked, the key didnt work at first, I have a lot of rollback even though I drive an automative, I have had successive tire blowouts due to a now recalled part, the car was stuck in park for a week until it was finally fixed, the alarm tends to short out, I have had TWO electrical FIRES from "closing the door too many times" and have had other parts of my car fall apart from the day the warranty ended. Yes Jettas drive great and have lots of great features, but you will pay in the end for the lack of reliablity.
