Bought out the lease - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By Rickpw - October 22 - 10:00 amIve been driving this 1998 GLX VR6 five-speed Jetta for four years on a lease. I like it so much, I decided to buy the car at lease end. Its still way fun to drive. Every friend whos ever driven it says, "wow, I love driving this car." The pick-up is great and sporty. This GLX is a completely different beast from a regular Jetta, but you probably already knew that. Id recommend the leather seats, which are especially nice heated. My only problems have been an electrical repair. Also, the tires, because of the sport model, I recently found out are quite expensive! I only have slightly over 50,000 miles on the car, so why not keep driving it?

Great all around vehicle - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By Dan G - September 22 - 10:10 pmFun to drive, reliable and gets 40 mpg city driving, 50+ highway. Trim is poor, out and in. Door, manual door locks, molding, glove box, nobs, all have been broke. Living in Denver, CO, it starts in cold and takes a few miles to warm up - that is diesel, no problem. Runs up to the mountains at speed. With 200K, finally replaced clutch. Lots of cooling hoses which are not easy to replace. German engineering: what are thinking? Frustrating to work on, fortunately, that does not occur very often. ANY work by an independent, German mech costs $$$, parts are outrageously $$$, I know my junk yard guy. NO trouble with engine, fuel, cooling, heating, electric systems (manual windows).

Ill Buy Another - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By La Bomba - August 30 - 7:40 amPurchased used from Ford lot during yr 2000. Upgrade options include sun/moon roof and remote key access. Weak on acceleration and tops for cross-country touring/hwy driving. Solid feel with matching reliability. 1.8L fuel injected gets about 33/44 mpg road/hwy, a must in todays economy. Tight in the back for big folk; however, far roomier than the VW Bug. The battery linked factory VW radio was a mess, so I upgraded it with a Pioneer system. Wide wheel base with FWD a plus in weather. Roomy trunk. Lots of elbow room up front. Stout frame is a snap to parallel park in urban places. Nasty tacky exterior rubber door guards fall off too much. Overall: very good touring sedan (A-).

Break all at once - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By farid - August 8 - 12:36 pmI was disapointed with this car, despite the low mileage (under 45,000 at purchase) it start to break starting with the engine mounts, axels, brakes, engine lights went on since I changed the spark plugs. The bottom line its not fun as advertised, I liked my old Corrola 90 with 130,000 miles on it better.

bullet proof for the most part - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By kolt - July 19 - 6:20 pmI have owned my jetta for about a year got it with 137k replaced the struts pads cleaned the rotors replaced the belts and got a new exhaust. Given how old the car was with the miles all that should be expected I now have 160k plus and Im replacing the clutch and motor mounts but the car Neva has left me stranded always starts is sweet in the snow and will eat a stock civic. With mods will keep up wit fast cars. Relatively cheap to fix if you can dyi. Its got a good amount of torque for carrying hills but not so much top end for speeding tickets if your looking for a decent looking out side a very Nice inside and and decent lil 4 banger this is what your want v-tec virtually tourqeless economy car

TDI Jetta - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By abcde - June 23 - 2:00 amGreat mileage and fun to drive and is very comfortable for long periods. After 45000 glow plugs had to be replaced for $600 and dealer had car for 2 weeks. I thought they should do better on both. No loaner available! No other problems with vehicle.

LOVE HATE RELATIONSHIP - 1998 Volkswagen Jetta
By spietrowski - May 24 - 10:00 amThe pluses of this car are that it is very fun to drive. The engine is powerful and acceleration great. It feels solid on the road and handles well. HOWEVER, never again. In the 6 years Ive owned it Ive had to fix: various front end problems, the transmission, window regulators, security system, damaged hoses and now the ABS
