For 2001, improved cloth and velour interior materials come standard in the GL and GLS trim. Side curtain airbags that offer head protection for front and rear passengers are introduced this year, and steering wheel controls for the audio and cruise systems are available on GLS/GLX trim models. Optional 17-inch wheels and a sport suspension can be had on GLX models and GLS models with the 1.8T or VR6 engine. The Wolfsburg Edition returns as a limited-edition model in early 2001 -- standard features include sport suspension, bolstered sport seats and 16-inch BBS wheels. All models get redesigned cupholders and a trunk entrapment release button. A wagon arrives in the spring of 2001.

Shes Been Good to me - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By bfourney - May 21 - 7:03 pmCertainly not my most reliable car, but it just has a lot of personality and its certainly been my favorite. MK IV VWs are famous for a handful of issues and mines had a few of them, all luckily covered under my CPO warranty since I bought it from a VW dealer. It was really love at first sight, a VR6 manual in silver with grey interior. The dealer let me take it out by myself and I was sold. I still love to drive it 4 years later and it still looks like new, aside from a couple of minor things. The issues? The infamous coilpack, MAF sensor, throttle body, and minor mechanical things like the latch on the armrest. VW recalled quite a few things before they ever failed on me.

Great Reliable Car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By herbz - April 2 - 6:35 pm164,000 miles and running great. Reliable as can be. Good on gas, MPG has dropped slightly as the car aged but still gets 30mpg city easily. Massive trunk for a small car. Other than ground clearance it is a very good winter car. Only issue is an intermittent CEL related to an emissions issue that comes and goes. Dealer says its not worth chasing as the car runs perfect. Definitely will consider another Jetta or VW product.

By Norma Rubin - March 25 - 7:10 amI have 87,000 miles on my 2001 Jetta VR6 wagon. So far I have had the mass air flow sensor replaced, which VW refunded part of the money. And the coil also was replaced, but what really flip me out was that the rear brakes had to be completely replaced at 25,000 miles that cost $1000. I love the way the car performs, but not so crazy with the fuel economy; highway 22 to 25 mpg city 15 to 18. What I dont see other owners talk about is the stereo, I think it is the best car stereo a car manufacturer has installed in a car in its class. I also notice that with this five year old car that the imitation wood trim is cracking and it will need to be replaced

Great Fun Car - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By fredflintstone - March 14 - 10:00 amThis one is a lease we will buy when over. This has been a great car with only one exception. The break light switch goes bad very quickly and the dealership did want to cover the 3rd one. One quick call to VW customer service and they made the dealer cover the switch. This car handles great and has tons of features that you would have to spend thousands more to get on a BMW, etc.

By used to love vw - March 5 - 2:00 amI have had nothing but problems with my 01 GLX VR6 sedan. The biggest and most frustrating problem I have had is everytime I would use my rear defroster, the radio would go complete static. VW worked on this for over a year taking my car in over 10 times and finally this month just fixed the problem after a brand new radio ( that wasnt the problem) and finally a new rear window. The first week I had my new car the snaps that on the mats all broke off, my car wouldnt run one night because it was raining and they had to put new coiling in the engine, the drivers heated seat has not been working, the engine is not smooth and many times "skips".

By nywvblue - January 25 - 2:04 amI bought my car from its original owner, a retired couple, with 75,000 miles on it and at 6 years old. It had some strange wear in the interior (the arm rests on the doors in the front were half peeled away), but otherwise it was in perfect condition. It lived with me in NYC for the next 2+ years and, aside from a nagging CEL situation due to the MAF sensor failing every 8 months or so as well the mechanism in one side window suddenly failing, it has been a super, reliable car.

Good but needs refinement - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By Shree - December 8 - 7:06 amI have a 01 Jetta Wolfsburg for the past 6 months. Has been generally good. During this period cruise control died. Sound system good when it works. Looks like there is a bug in the software. Occassionally CD player stops working when car is started. Have to change to tape mode and come back to CD player to enable sound. cupholder design flaw. Cannot load an in-dash CD with the cupholder in use. Also I found that pick up was unusually bad at low RPM. It feels like engine might stall when accelerating from a stop. Ride quality very good and there is also a fun to drive factor with this car. Also has a lot of features not standard in other small sedans. This might justify the higher price.

Dont Buy One! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By BWare - November 20 - 1:46 amI admired the looks of the Jetta for a long time and knew this was the car for me. I bought it with 15,00 miles in 2001. When I drove the 5 speed, I was thrilled with its zip and handling. Never had a more fun car to drive. However, this car has cost me more money to maintain than ANY I have ever owned. Replacement of coils, light and electrical probs, the list is a long one. I will never own another Volkswagon. I am going back to buy another reliable, if a bit boring, Honda-which I had before and which cost me almost nothing to maintain and never broke down.

Love it! - 2001 Volkswagen Jetta
By PMeyer - November 12 - 2:00 amI had a 97 Jetta before purchasing my 01 Woflsburg in March of 03. I love it! I bought it with 20,000 miles on it....Only problem I had is that the senor for the hazard lights/turn signals had to be replaced at 22,000 miles...the clutch needs to be lubricated once in a while because of it squeeking. Other than that, Ive had no problems (keeping my fingers crossed)

By ajkula - October 17 - 2:00 amJust got rid of my 2001GL.What I am going to miss in a Odyssey I traded it in for: -absolutely superb handling, braking and style,excellent fuel economy, and its "ugly duckling in the mood" charm. what I am not going to miss: -absolutely horrible auto transmission (get a stick by all means),misting in all and any type of weather,rear seat passengers complaining about lack of comfort, troubles with alarm system.
