This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's mini-SUV receives just a couple cosmetic changes this year. Models ordered with the Quick Order package now have gray-painted bumpers and overfenders, and Toyota has added color-keyed bumpers and overfenders to the "L" package. There are also three new L package colors: Rainforest Pearl, Spectra Blue Mica and Pearl White (Natural White and Vintage Gold have been discontinued).

Pros:
  • Steers and handles like a car, thoughtful cabin design, well-built interior.
Cons:
  • No V6 engine option, noisy, most desirable equipment is optional.

For a 4 cylinder AWD and as light as this vehicle is it stinks on gas mileage. We get 17 miles/gal around town. Ugh. The CRV we had got 24 around town and it was a 6 cylinder AWD It doesnt hold its value. We leased it, we have 5,500 mile son it and to buy out the lease is still $23,000...more than a brand new one. Dont buy one.

  • A Great Small SUV That Rides Like a Car - 2002 Toyota RAV4

It is very comfortable, fun to drive, and rides quite nicely. I am tall, but there is still plenty of head and leg room. Its easy to get in and out of. You can sit straight up and still reach the wheel easily. The gas mileage is very good, so you dont have to pay the price for sitting high like most trucks and SUVs. The acceleration is very good for driving around town and getting up to 35-45 MPH. It seems more like a sports car to drive than your typical truck or SUV. Some people have complained of rattles, but I havent noticed anything that bothers me. The CR-V was nice, but this is much more fun to drive.

  • Not bad for a compact SUV - 2002 Toyota RAV4

Overall the RAV4 has been a nice car to drive around town in. The styling is attractive and it gets the gas mileage advertised. At 2 yrs. old the seal on my RAVs back window leaked and had to be replaced and the sunroof began leaking almost as soon as I got it. Ive been told the backseats are terribly uncomfortable on long trips. My biggest complaint would be the hesitation in the transmission. The 02 RAV also has very little power. I understand that has been improved in the 04 model. Overall, it is fun to drive and gives the driver an excellent view of the road. It has a fabulous braking system and handles excellently.

You see them everywhere, except in junkyards. Ive been in and out of a few over the last year hunting for parts for my Grand Marquis. I havent seen a Rav 4 yet. Id like to get a spare steel wheel but I always turn up empty. If you want a car thats affordable, easy to handle, somewhat economical, and really reliable you wont go wrong here. Lots of cargo room if you fold down the rear seats. Even more if you lift them out ! Not the most stylish vehicle on the road but its not hideous either. Mines full time 4WD so it might be a little more aggressive when it comes to cabin noise but its livable. Superior road handling. Average everywhere else which truly isnt a bad thing. You could spend almost double on a Lexus but would your 5 or 6 bags of groceries in the back know or even care ?

  • U got to love the RAV - 2002 Toyota RAV4

The performance of the vehicle is excellent and it give a decent fuel economy in its class. Its roomy, has good looks both interior and exterior (with L Pack)and leather interiors and one can surely say that this vehicle could have easily carried a LEXUS badge. Talking about power and torque, in its class its really good. Yes, one can of course argue that the others in the segment have more HP than RAV4, but let be practical, this is a recreational vehicle and not a truck. And of course, the HP was will neve end..., I would say it you can make a deal on this buddy, PEACE OF MIND is guranteed.

  • drive on freeway before you buy - 2002 Toyota RAV4

I bought the RAV4 for reliability and comfort. I am an older female with a disablity. I have had this SUV for three months and wish I would not have bought it. It does not hold the road and vibrates the steering wheel at 65 mph. I am getting no help from the dealer..I am told it is because "I dont know how SUVs drive". Well, the car drifts all over the road...I thought a new vehicle should atleast hold the road. Beware before you buy.

I got rid of my 96 GMC Jimmy and bought the RAV4. The 4-cyl. has good acceleration and nimble handling. Im dissapointed in the gas mileage--21 mpg in the city. Ive tried switching to an 89 octane with no better results, so Im sticking to 87. The rear headrests can block your view, so if you routinely drive alone, Id suggest removing them for the clearest view. Im tall--510" and there is plenty of leg room on the drivers side. Annoying rattle behind the glove compartment at speeds in excess of 30. Rear seats remove and reinstall with ease. Nice feature to haul around the dogs.

The 2002 Toyota RAV4s exterior on the L-series model is the best around. It truly looks similar to a BMW from the side and is inexpensive to boot. I have found nothing but good reviews on the vehicle and it is fun to drive! Its spacious and fuel efficient and I cant think of a better small SUV to make it through winter and cruise through summer in!!!

  • Will Never Buy A Toyota Again - 2002 Toyota RAV4

Car handles great in snow, rain. It is SEVERELY underpowered and I had to replace the catalytic converter at 62,000K ($2200). Transmission started slipping shortly after at 74,000K (new ECU, $2800). My average mileage is 20.8, so no sipper at all. Now at 100K the transmission is starting to act up again so its going out the door before it becomes my issue. Will never buy a Toyota again.
