This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • Most technologically designed automobile - 2005 Toyota Prius

The car with its GPS and information and tech. items excels but needs more human luxuries i.e. power seats, telescopic steering wheel and a better riding suspension. It is well worth the purchase price even if gas mileage is slightly over promised, the savings more than compensate for monthly payments if financed comparatively to other cars. I do not find its design very attractive or space age but am very satisfied in its value and reliability. All in all after considering all other offerings I am almost completely satisfied.

The Prius has been completely reliable as I anticipated from owning several Toyota models. The hybrid system works silently while providing a lifetime MPG of 47. The car is roomy and comfortable for 4 adults.

I am very happy with my prius, but the mileage advertised is not accurate. I have been averaging about 47mpg around town, and 48 on the highway. The service has been very good, but I have about 6000 miles on it. The hatchback gives ample room, with the seats down, I get more storage room than in my Accura sedan, It is surprisingly comfortable, and handles well at high speeds. The quietest car I have ever owned. And importantly, it is better for the environment

We have really enjoyed this vehicle. It is comfortable, accelerates nicely (but not a muscle machine), and has great gas mileage. We are very impressed with the conveniences and storage of the interior. We went to the Midwest this November and the car got 43 mpg over the Rockies and with high speed driving in Montana and N. Dakota. We get about 50 mpg in the area of our rural home. We are satisfied and it meets our expectations.

The interior design is wonderful...love the panel controls on the steering wheel. The fuel economy need no words. I figured the $2000-$3000 price increase will be recovered in fuel costs within 2 years.

Handles great. Driven over 15,000 miles with no problems, including mountains where my 60s beetle would never have maintained 65-70 on the uphill grades like the Prius does. It holds a bunch of luggage for a snowbirding couple with seatbacks down and can easily take 15-20 8 foot 2x4s (or fewer 2x10s, 2x12s, etc.) INSIDE with the hatch closed. I havent tried 10 footers yet, but Im pretty sure theyll fit too if youre willing to put one end on the dashboard. 4x8 plywood is a cartopper. Its not a race car but it knocks the socks off the beetles Ive owned with more space, comfort and 45-48 ACTUAL MPG (an occasional 50+). With the electronic key you dont take the key from your pocket.

This car is easy and fun to drive. It has great pickup - as good as my previous 4 cylinder 21 mpg car used to get. It is quiet and roomy. I still cant believe that so much is fit into such a compact package! Its fun having people stop me and ask me about the car since people are fascinated by how quiet it is. That really captures peoples attention. Stated gas mileage is exaggerated compared to real life. In high traffic areas when you have to stop and go a lot, you will not get good city mileage - hwy will be better. I get 42 city, 48 hwy.

  • Prius saved me $8,000 in gas - 2005 Toyota Prius

My Prius was in a national survey during the first 40,000 miles averaging 50.9 mpg. Ive had over 12 new vehicles from different brands and this one the best besides saving over $8,000 so far. Toyota got it right. Only repair has been oil changes and running great. My next vehicle will be the next generation Prius at 80-100 mpg. My wife and I though that gas was high ($1.69/gallon) when we bought this car. We really look smart now with gas over $3.25. They are working on the next generation Prius and I can not wait to purchase the next one. Out of my last 12 new vehicles this ranks A +++.
