This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • 30 hours in traffic - 5 gallons of gas - 2005 Toyota Prius

I was forced to evacuate Houston during Hurricane Rita. In the ensuing traffic jam, I spent 30 hours in traffic, but since the Prius does not burn fuel while stopped and runs off the battery at low speed, I used only 5 gallons of gas! I had the A/C on low and saw thousands of people stranded on the road with families, elderly folks and children all night hoping for help. Huge bottlenecks were formed around gas stations where hundreds of cars crowded the pumps. If everyone had a hybrid car, people might not get stuck in those situations because their cars wont burn gas while idling. During the summer I average 47 mpg in both highway and city driving. In the spring and fall, I average 52 mpg!

No problems at all. Gas mileage is running between 45 and 49 each time. I have not seen a 50 average yet. I only do city driving....I keep hoping to go over the 50 mpg.... ANY suggestions??? By the way... I also own a Lexus LS and I most often drive the Prius!

Bought this car in April, 2005 after 13- month wait. I was not disappointed. Car is everything claimed to be - fuel efficient (averages about 45 MPG), no repairs at all to date. This Prius is fully equipped with navigation system.

  • Fun, Stylish, and Great Mileage, Too! - 2005 Toyota Prius

The Prius is a wonderful car, easily the best Ive had in a long, long time. I traded in a 2004 Volvo S40 for it; the primary reason was the mileage which was terrible on the Volvo. To my surprise, the advantages of the Prius -- besides the superb mileage -- are many. Im 62, and the leg-room and headroom are the most Ive had in any car (the back-seat is quite comfortable, too). The "futuristic" design is quite stylish, and the drive -- with the little "tog-knob" gearshift, push-button starter and parking gear, and display screen -- is just plain fun.

Review based on one year of daily use, combined city and highway driving in both summer and winter. Positive: Great economy, comfortable, promotes conservative driving style. Well designed interior that optimizes room, comfort and ergonomics, offers excellent forward & lateral visibility. Excellent fit and finish. When pushed to the limit it behaves predictably. Negative: Too sensitive to cross winds at highway speeds, poor visibility when reversing (would benefit from active sonar). Spartan interior could offer sun roof & memory power seats etc. Over-boosted brakes and steering resulting in little driver feedback (probably a positive for average North American driver).

My drive to work is 10 miles - half highway, half city and I have never gotten less then 50mpg. First long trip is 3 weeks off and cant wait to use the cruise control.

I love my Prius. Ive had it for just under a month and the mileage gets better every week. The first we we averaged 45mpg and am up to 48mpg. I drive mostly highway and am impressed with performance. People are amazed at how roomy and comfortable the car is, how smoothly it rides and how quiet. Our Prius is as quiet on the highway as our Chrysler Town & Country. The controls took a little getting used to and I still turn on the wipers by accident occasionally but thats okay. I have not found anything about this car that I dont love. I would recommend the Prius to anyone looking for a fun and stylish car to drive. I went from $35/week to $15/week on gas. This vehicle is well worth the wait

We bought this car just a month ago and love it. The power to be more than adequate; it handles well and provides a very comfortable ride. Its quiet and feels very solid on the road. Not much room for long legged passengers in the back seat, but ample cargo space, especially when the back seats are lowered. Controls take a little getting used to but quickly become second nature. We are so pleased with this vehicle that we are contemplating buying a second one. We live way out in the country so its quite a commute to get anywhere and its nice not to be hitting the gas pumps every few days. Its also fun to see the looks on peoples faces when the engine turns off at stop lights.

  • My Tammi - 2005 Toyota Prius
    By -

I love my Tammi (Prius). I bought it for its sexy and sleek style and MPG is just a great bonus. The rear hatch doesnt always shut right (a flaw I think) you need to bang it down. The rear wiper should be bigger. I would like the headlights to be auto on. The tilt wheel adustment could use a little more tilt. It is fun to drive, catches eyes and is just plain cute.It also has all the guts it needs to have to get along.
