This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • The best car Ive ever owned. - 2005 Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius has delivered everything I look for in an automobile. While I have not yet achieved the 50-60 mpg range, I do average 44.7 mpg. That may be due to the fact I live in a mountainous area which requires more gasoline usage to pull up the hills. If you like to hear your music more than the roar of an engine, this is the car for you. Its so quiet you cant tell its running. Dont mistake it for a compact car, either. My husband is 65" and weighs over 320 lbs. and he fits just fine. We are so impressed with this vehicle, we each have one. I look forward to the day when every car on the road is a hybrid, because they not only cut down on air pollution, but also noise.

It may not be the best looking car I have owned but it is the most fun. Easy to drive in and out of traffic. Parking is a snap. Overall a great fun car to drive.

This Prius is THE winner. Exceptional engineering, that works. A lot of thought put into the way a person uses a car, especially from the womans point of view. Quiet. Convenient. Very good accleration and speed. Mileage: 7months 7500miles 47.8MPG over all. 60 mpg on LEVEL terrain @ 35 to 50 mph on a 20 mile stretch. It can do it. 1700 mile round trip across Nebraska, over the Rocky Mountains, over two mtn passes at 10,000 ft,and across colorado at posted highway speeds, 46MPG. A good interstate highway automobile. This may be only me at my age but I find that I have markedly less eye fatigue with the Discharge Headlights. So far the best vehicle I have ever owned, over the last sixty years.

I have been more than surprised and delighted at my experience with the Prius. Having been a diehard USA brand driver - the high cost of gas and length of my compute plus the fact that no American company has a hybrid - drove me to try an alternative. Research and a trial drive convinced me that the Prius was the way to go and I have not regretted it. The car is comfortable which is also a big consideration for me as I am only 511. I compute 60 miles a day and have cut my gas costs from over $60 a week to approximately $20. What more can I say?

I am extremely pleased so far with my 2005 Prius. The comfort and performance have exceeded my expectations. Quality is excellent and it is fun to drive. It is comfortable for four people on any length trip, but baggage limitations make it more practical for two people on long trips. There is plenty of cargo space with the rear seat folded down.

No problem starting in -30 degree celsius weather. Very good fuel, receive 55 mpg so far after 5,000 miles. Some glare on windshield from dashboard high beam blue light indicator and flasher lights at night when very dark outside. Very comfortable seats. Sound system very ordinary. Very happy so far. Garage not too much experience - with hybrid. Have difficulty programming locking system. would have liked a third key but was too expensive at $400 Can.

This is the right car at the right time and at the right place. I have owned this car for 12 months and have enjoyed the performance and comfort and reliabity it offers. Gas mileage is great. I have noticed that mileage is effected by the terrain you are negotiating. I live in a hilly area and that drags my average surface street mileage down to about 42mpg. However, traveling on the freeway, at speeds of 70-80 mph, I usually get 54 to 62 mpg. All in all, the Pruis is a very reliable and economical form of transportatlion. I love it more everyday as I check fuel prices!!

Overall a very well designed vehicle. Needs a power drivers seat and telescopic steering wheel to fit a wider range of driver sizes.

We now have 145,000 miles on our Prius and it has no mechanical problems and drives as good as it did when I purchased it with 67k. Still getting 45 mpg, and I dont drive easy. Cannot find a better car out there for the money and cost of ownership. Have done basic maintenance--oil changes, spark plagues, air filter, trans fluid, and a new 12V battery, and tires. Only thing that stopped working was the cd changer, but we use an ipod through the tape deck anyway. Still using original headlight bulbs, and brakes. Car handles well; very easy to drive, very good in snow and ice. Unfortunately, the car does not have comfortable seats, and is not sporty or fun to drive for a young man.

After initial software problems, the car is generally reliable. Weather conditions, especially high humidity, will set-off a cacophony of warning lights, but after the software fix, the system resets itself so that I do not have to drive back to the dealership every week. Ive been averaging 51-52 mpg on the highway but most drivers will only average a couple mpg better than a corolla. The secret to getting the advertised mpg is in the law of averages.
