This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • Id do it again - 2005 Toyota Prius

I love my Prius and Id do it again. I dont get the projected MPG advertised because of the manner in which I use the car (stopping and going for my work), but I still think its one of the best investments Ive ever made. Its comfortable, responsive and now that Ive had it awhile I think its attractive. The only downside Ive discovered is that Im on my third set of tires (55,000 miles) and tire manufacturers wont warranty tires on hybrids. If youre thinking about it, DO IT!

  • Its a No Brainer - 2005 Toyota Prius

Well I cant be too detailed as I have only driven my Prius for about a week now. It is fun and economical and not a bad ride for the cost. The only problem that I am having is that the windshield has an annoying rattle when I go over almost any bump. I am hoping to bring the car in and have it fixed. The car is very responsive and I cant believe the gas mileage that I am getting (average about 50mpg). If they fix this rattle in the windshield then I will highly recommend this car to everyone - as it is, everyone asks me about it. They all seem amazed and amused by its unique look, and it renders much more room then one might think and to top it off its very affordable.

IHave found nothing not to like. Car handles well, has excellent pickup and great turning radius. Has better leg room than our volvo s80 front and back. Mileage is excellent but falls 15% below the EPA statements. I have gotten 41.3 mpg in the first 1800 miles.

This is a great car for mileage especially given its size. Theres more interior room than youd expect. Two things to note: Dont expect anywhere near the EPA mileage numbers. One consumer magazine averaged 44 mpg. Thats about where Im at: 42-46 in town. A little less when its cold. A few miles more per gallon without the heater or a/c on. I can hit 50mpg or go as "low" as 32 mpg. The car is fine on the highway but take into account its small engine. Give yourself more room when passing another vehicle.

Overall we like the Prius, buy it does not get the gas mileage promised. It is comfortable. It has reasonable pick up for a 4 cyl. It left us stranded on the freeway only 4 months after we bought it. The dealer didnt have the necessary equipment to find out the problem, so we were without it for 4 days. Seems it was a computer problem. The car "thought" the battery was discharged, but it wasnt.

  • Ouch, what a feeling! - 2005 Toyota Prius

Bought pre-owned in 07 with 70K. Now have 205K. Accident, replaced HID headlight went out 2 weeks after warranty expired. Quoted $565 to replace! Now the brake ECU have gone and they want $2675 to replace or I can take my chances crashing into a tree! Toyota Customer Care is worse than useless; I feel like taking a shower after talking to them to get rid of the slime! Any fuel savings have been wiped out by the outrageous cost of repair and service. Their dealerships arent built like palaces from proceeds from recycling soda cans! Never again, Toyota! The new Fiesta is supposed to get 40 mpg highway without using golden flux capacitors!

  • The Most Conscience Vehicle On The Road. - 2005 Toyota Prius

As one of the first people to own this car in southern california i cant say enough positive about it. It is an absolute joy to drive. Dont let ANYONE tell you that this car is underpowered. It hauls! I drive the car between Los Angeles and San Francisco. my average speed is between 85 and 95 mph fighting head winds all the way, and it still gets 38-40 mpg. On a recent trip to northern calif I drove the car well over 1500 miles and it cost me arond 80 DOLLARS. I also own a porsche 993 and an 04 Jag XJ8. The Prius is the one I perfer to drive not only because of fuel economy and the fact that it is rated a 0 emissions vehicle, but also because it is so easy to manuver and very comfortable

I love it. Its fun to drive. I love that it holds six CDs and 9 speakers. The navigation system is awesome and really helps me get around when I dont have time to look up directions. The energy and consumption screens are neat and show a lot of information. The trunk is accessible from the backseat, which is nice if were stopped an my kids need to get something. One, two, or all of the backseats can fold down at a time, which is also nice. The car is comfortable, looks good, is well-built, accommodating, and compact. Great for families, but not really big families.

I bought my Prius only seven months after buying a Dodge Dakota. The cost of gas was almost equal to my monthly truck payment. Although you don’t usually get quite what the sticker says the fuel economy is absolutely phenomenal. It truly is the car of the future! It is impossible to fully understand how impressive this car can be until you drive it. It has great safety features and is very convenient with the available smart key and GPS navigation system. I love my car and it was the best car I have ever bought.

  • Got to Love that Car - 2005 Toyota Prius

This is the best car I have ever owned. It is everything they said it would be. My first gas tank gave 50 MPG. Its comfortable, has great pickup and is really fun to drive. I love the GPS system and although that was not a priority for me I am glad I have it and have used it several times. The voice recognition is sometimes a little unreliable but am finding a normal tone works best with it. One negative that Ive encountered is the paint job. I had a dent that had to be pulled out and repainted and was told by the repair facility that it has a very thin layer of paint. Driving in the first snow fall and going up a hill, as long as I kept it slow and steady I didnt have a problem
