This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

Great car! Runs as well today as it did 1st day I bought it! The issue is maintenance costs, which are considerable IF you dont do your own maintenance! Weve had no recalls, no repair under warranty, BUT the maintenance costs to-date approach $5000! That breaks down to about ($995/mo to be exact!) $3900 more than my 12 yr old pickup that I drive everyday! Ask to see the maintenance schedule & visit the repair shop and checkout the listed maintenance schedule prices! A REAL EYE OPENER! Oh, if I only knew then what I know now! OUCH!

  • Issues with 05 prius you should know - 2005 Toyota Prius

After purchasing my 05 prius with factory navigation and HID headlights, package 6 I believe. Just be aware that all 04 and 05 had the ugly painted door panels and dash, I strongly would avoid these if you can get the 06 and newer. the paint has peeled off on these parts. I went to a prius dismantler and purchased all the door panels and dash parts from a 08 prius to do the swap, so much nicer. The second and biggest issue is the HID headlight bulbs, they just shut off while you use them . The best solution is replace them with aftermarket HID bulbs, do not use the factory Toyota bulbs, they will go out again. Numerous owners have had this issue, ballast is not the problem, its the bulbs.

The Prius is a joy to own although I miss the sporty sleekness of my Toyota Celica. It has been a very economical car to own so far - fuel & no repairs.

  • 50 -55 MPG -- LOVE LOVE LOVE IT - 2005 Toyota Prius

We are getting 50 - 55 miles per gallon. Great ---It is peppy, fun, and the mpg makes it super. Love the Toyota reputation - put on 15,000 miles and no problems. My 17 year old is short and she can reach the gas and brake with no problem -- she is 4 foot 8 inches. Dad is 510" and he is comfortable. The computer screen is great. Make it in a mini van model so we can travel in it. Wow - that would be so great.

The most important feature of the Prius is zero emissions. Higher gas mileage is second. We need to create more vehicles that are environmentally friendly as the Prius is. I love the ride and how it handles. I am not crazy about the hatchback feature, but it is not a major drawback, either.

I feel pride in driving a fuel sipper. My only complaints about the Prius would be the flat black metal trim (it always shows fingerprints), and the matte finish material on the dash near the window (it always shows dust). Id rather have vinyl or a leather interior (The tan microfiber always looks dirty).

This vehicle has electronic controls and features only found in high end model cars. The hybrid mechanism switches flawlessly on the fly between the gas and electric power. The car drives and feels stable at high speed, up to 90 mph in my case. The MPG is less than the advertised number but that is due to the EPA using a flawed protocol that yield misleading information about all cars. The design appeals to me as it represents a futuristic concept but it is certainly does not have a cool look. The interior is well laid out and practical but sparse. The sound system is superb. I would buy this car again, which sadly is not the case with some of the other cars I purchased.

  • My Consumer Vote - 2005 Toyota Prius

I bought the Prius once they came out with the hatchback. I can carry a 3-person family and camping gear or an entire drumset with no problem. Besidese the great fuel efficency, you have one heck of a practical car as well. I call this my "consumer vote" because this is where Id like to see the auto industry go. Im getting ~46 mpg over the course of a year. Mpg in the 30s seems silly now!

  • Prius Rocks - 2005 Toyota Prius

Prius is simply the best vehicle I have owned, and I have owned a number after driving for over 30 years. Reliable, comfortable and fun to drive - not to mention the best of all - super fuel economy. Although I dont get the 50-60 mpg that EPA says, I do get 45 to 48 on average, and thats still awesome. Only concern is that I am now on my 3rd set of tires, soon to purchase my 4th. But a really great car all around!
