This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • 80,000 miles and counting - 2005 Toyota Prius

We have over 80,000 miles on our Prius and only bought new tires and oil/filter changes. We have owned over a dozen new vehicles from Ford, Chevy, Pontiac, Dodge and Chrysler and this is the BEST vehicle weve owned. Read more comments on the interior room (my son-in-law is 64" and has more than enough room in the back seat. I have six houses and have hauled 8 foot 2x4s in it and even stoves and clothes dryers. I was in a national test in the "early years" and the mpg was 50.9 for the first two years of driving. It is doing well and I smile each time we fill it up. Cant wait for the 2010 to get 60+ mpg.

Prius has been a blast to drive around town and on long trips. If you keep the speedo under 70 mph, you will be rewarded by 50 mpg. Around town, 55 mpg is easily achieved. With tax breaks and the high price of gas, I smile when filling up once every two weeks (get about 600 miles per tank). People riding in the car love the ride and comment how comfortable the rear seat is. Find a dealer who does not add a surcharge over invoice. Things that I would like to see are: darker interior, better bass in "premium sound system", better tires (I swapped mine out for Nokian i3s - much better for stability and safety), more instrument feedback, a more powerful battery pack and a plug in option.

Havent had the car very long. It will take me a month to figure out what everything does but I have been disappointed in the mileage.....only getting 40 m.p.g.

  • The Ideal all-purpose vehicle - 2005 Toyota Prius

The Prius has exceeded my expectations on all counts--it is fun to drive, comfortable, and the mileage is outstanding but not as high as Toyota advertises. The interior layout is well thought out and is most versatile. The information displays need some simplification and better visibility but they are certainly complete.

I owned the 2001 model and now have the 2004. The 2004 is a completely different vehicle - great mileage and built with care. I find the power not an issue. It will easily pass other cars and climb hills with no problem. You cant compare it to a V8. And on city streets and crowded freeways who needs that kind of power? I feel that the average person is not facing reality. Its not the 60s but a world of uncertainty. This car is the future and the future is here. Hydrogen is a long way off and the price of oil is not about to fall.

  • THE BEST CAR IVE EVER OWNED - 2005 Toyota Prius
    By -

I am 65 years old and have owned many cars in my life. After 10 months and 15,700 miles I can honestly say that the Toyota Prius is the best car that ive ever owned. I originally purchased this car for its fuel efficiency (I am getting an honest 48 m.p.g.) but have found many other things to like about this car. After the rear seat flips down with a touch of 2 buttons you get a cargo area equivalent to a small van. The steering wheel touch controls are very convenient. The keyless entry and ignition system is a joy to use. The engine is quiet and vibration free. The gears shift extremely smoothly. The feel of the road is like a full sized car. Back seat comfort is good. Great car

  • Id buy it again - 2005 Toyota Prius

I affectionately call this my golf cart since at slower speeds, cornering, it feels so easy to drive and is so quiet. Like no other car Ive owned. It has good pick up on hills which are abundant where I live. It accelerates to acceptable speed quickly when getting on the freeway. Its a fun car. Speakers/sound isnt that full or great so if you want great sound, go buy a new sound system. If your phobic about fingerprints, this car is not for you. The dash area and touch screen always look smudgy no matter how many times you try and keep it clean. The handling is excellent though and Ive overlooked the other areas because of this.

I am delighted with my experiences driving the Prius. It drives like a much larger car. I feel as if I am driving a computer assisted vehicle which intuits my needs. I had a very close call when a car suddenly pulled into my lane in front of me without warning. I did not think I would stop before impact. With the Prius, I felt as if the tires were velcroed to the ground; it stopped immediately without any fishtailing or any sidewise movement. I do not believe my Nissan would have stopped so quickly or made me feel so secure. I have been driving Nissans most of my adult life (my other car is still a Nissan) but after the Prius, I am now a convicted Toyota advocate.

  • I love my Prius - 2005 Toyota Prius

I drove a Tahoe before purchasing my prius. At the recommendations of my father I looked at the prius & ended up ordering one. My Tahoe sold to the first person that looked at it which put me in a bind for transportation when I still had 2 months to go before it was to come in - it ended up coming in sooner and it has amazed me how much I like my prius - even more now that gas locally has risen to $2.69/gallon. I admit I miss my Tahoe but I dont miss close to $80/week in gas to get to work. The prius is a definate learning experience in changing the way you drive. The more miles I drive the better gas mileage I seem to get. I love my prius + savings on gas and state/fed taxes!!!

After a nine month wait, I picked up my 2004 Prius in August of 2004. It was all that I expected and more. The gas mileage is the greatest. Its better in warmer weather than cold. There are little features that Im constantly finding out about, such as all the hidden compartments. I love the environmental features. I found out the dashboard is made of bio plastic (from plant products) rather than petro plasic (made from oil products). I love all those environmental features such as the fact that the cars aluminum body, batteries etc. are recycleable. The batteries are not hazardous waste, they are NiMH batteries. It also has PZEV emmisions.
