For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

This is a very nice car to drive. I thought the steering tended to wander a little, so you have to pay attention to the road all the time. Not a bad idea anyway! The ride is very smooth and quiet, even on the wash-board gravel road we live on. Im 62" tall and 240 lbs. The drivers seat is a little small for me, but the cabin is otherwise roomy enough for me to consider taking it on long drives. The Energy screen on the display can be distracting, so we default the display to the Consumption screen, which shows a bar graph of fuel usage in 5 minute intervals. The car is fun to drive around town while doing errands.

A great car if gas mileage and practicality are your primary considerations. Youll sacrifice a some luxury and performance if you are converting from a similarly priced conventional sedan like Accord or Camry.

I have about 12k miles on mine 2005 now. It is the base model and I love the car. Plenty of power in my opinion and I have carried three bikes and three people for a short distance all inside the car. Now I have a bike rack on the back. Service every five thousand miles is only $55. I get about 38 mpg around town and 45 to 52 on the freeway. EPA estimates of around town mileage are irritatingly false.

No disappointments! Well worth the wait. I get mileage as advertised if I drive carefully. At 62"/240 lbs. I am comfortable. Amazing to buy this much technology for $21,000! I purchased an 04 and drove it 14000 miles then my 05 came in - both have not needed any repair other than routine maintenance. My 06 is due in January.

Ive had it only for 6 weeks, so maybe its still the honeymoon. I bought it to do my part for the environment and the economy; but its turned out to be a fun car to drive. Peppy on pickup, easily maneuverable, feels roomy, even for my 6 foot height. Plenty of power. I pushed it on a deserted, straight stretch of freeway -- and pulled back when it reached 93. Im sure it would have gone over 100. With careful driving, Im getting 52 mpg.

  • A great big little car! - 2005 Toyota Prius

A fun to drive, economical car with a great style. It has more headroom than my previous Cadillac, more leg room, and the rear passengers have leg room, even with the front seats all the way back! I love not having to even take my keys out of my pocket to use the vehicle! Weve got a second Prius on order, because my husband and I BOTH want to drive the car!

  • Bonnies Lean, Green, Clean Machine! - 2005 Toyota Prius

I love my lean, green, clean machine so much that I racked on over 64,000 miles in 3 yrs. I live in ski resort mountains and travel with my 5 person family. I really put this car to the test! I usually get 45 mpg in the winter, 50 in spring/fall, and 55-65 all summer. These numbers are a packed car (500+ lbs of psgrs) and mountain travel. The numbers depend on the driver. If my lead-footed husband takes my car, he only gets 42-45 mpg. The only problem that I had in 3 yrs is that the gas door started to stick, but my husband lubricated it and bent something and it is fixed. Gas prices being what they are, my Prius literally makes its own loan pmt in gas savings each mo! What a pleasure!

While not giving the advertised mileage, nothing comes even far from what this vehicle will deliver. The car is simply too fun to drive. I own and drive anything from an F-250 diesel double cabin truck to an XJ8 Jaguar and find this Prius the best overall car yet. I even call it the "Medicare transport" because it provides the best interior space and comfort, all in one car, to allow me to carry my 83 y/o parents around. Driving my Prius in the city, where the mileage significantly increases, provides the greatest ease of use any car has ever given me. While not a tire screaching beast, it will accelerate and handle fast enough to safely evade impending dangers of closed quarters traffic.

This car is not all it claims to be. I am very disappointed with the mileage I have achieved, thus far. The main reason I bought the car was for its above excellent gas mileage.

  • 2005 Prius- we love it - 2005 Toyota Prius

I was somewhat concerned that my wife would not like going from a van, Dodge Grand Caravan, to this small vehicle but she loves it. It is very responsive and quick enough to enter freeway traffic with no problem. We use it at 70 mph and still get over 52 MPG on trips with a good load. Its typically 45-57 mpg in city.
