This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

I own two Prius - version 1 and version 2. I average 55MPG during the non-AC season in Florida and 49MPG during the worst of summer. The best thing about my Prius is I can run all day on the Interstate and get 45MPG at 75-80 MPH! After Hurricane Dennis we drove nearly 3 weeks on a tank of gas while everyone else waited in huge lines. My wifes version 1 car actually gets 57MPG with 69,000 miles on it. I have 2 complaints; the difference between EPA mileage estimates and reality, and this car does not do well on short trips. It needs about 3 miles to max out the battery charge which kills MPG on those 7-11 runs.

Best car Ive ever driven. Its the best hybrid available, as most other hybrids are not a true hybrid like this. We average 50 MPG in warm weather and 40 MPG in cold weather. Yet it does not lack power. The electric motor and gas motor combine power when you want to accelerate fast. The the gas shuts off as you coast, and the brakes regenerate the battery as you slow down. Its Brilliant!

Went from an SUV to the Prius.. Thought I would be laughing all the way to the gas pump, but expected some difficulty with the transition. Absolutely have no reservations and the car drives incredibly. Its just a GREAT vehicle...Would recommend to anyone! Get it before December 31st and qualify for a $2,000 tax credit.. Thats 2,000 more in refund..dollar for dollar.

Fun to drive, excellent quality, great fuel economy, the fuel economy has been what is advertised, you just have to learn to drive all over.

In the two years that Ive owned my Prius, it has exceeded all my expectations. Having previously owned three fairly high-end SUVs, I expected to feel cramped in the Prius. On the contrary, Ive found it extremely comfortable to drive, there is room when necessary for four passengers and my two dogs, and with the back seats laid down, theres plenty of room for over-sized items like small furniture. My husband was sure Id miss the luxuries of my other cars, but that proved wrong, too. The GPS and other in-dash or steering wheel features are great, and it does not have the "empty shell" feeling of other compact cars. I also expected not much power, but pick-up on hills and onramps is fine.

I have owned Honda, Nissan,Toyota and American made cars. The Prius far surpasses all these. I had two wait 6 months for the car. It was worth the wait. Gas mileage and room are excellent.

  • Short but sweet. - 2005 Toyota Prius

2000 miles, not long but plenty of time to conclude that the Prius lives up to its billing. Yes you can accomplish the EPA numbers, but you will not likely drive in that prescribed manner. However, with very little change in driving habits from our recent 97 Camry XLE, we get a solid 45 MPG overall. Very much a pleasure to drive.

Excellent ride, gas mileage (45-50 mpg on highway) and super car to drive. Sporty look, everyone wants my car.
