This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

I have two one for me and my wife. This is the best car I have ever owned. Ive had the cars for ten months and average from 41 to 45 mpg in the winter and 46 to 51 in the warmer weather. Its comfortable, has good pickup and I really enjoy driving this car. I love the GPS system and although that was not a priority for me I am glad I have it and will never buy a car without it. What is surprising about this car is the amount of interior room. at 175 inches in length 3 inches shorter than a Nissan Sentra with much more interior space. In fact the exterior dimension, this car falls into the small car class and the interior has about the same amount of space as a mid-size car.

We knew going in that we would not get the MSRP mileage but we do get 45-55 mpg on our normal weekly driving. Just having a display showing constant and historical mpg has improved our driving methods - thus saving us even more gas. The lay-out of the controls on the steering wheel is awesome. The night mirror and 6-cd changer are wonderful editions that we love. We cannot say enough good things about this vehicle other than we wish we had two more!

Great car! Its a little sluggish on two lane passing, but other than that it has great handling. Mileage drops a lot in the winter. Better engine compartment insulation would undoubtedly help this as the engine runs a lot just to provide heat.

The 2005 Toyota Prius Hybrid is the most innovative and technologically advanced car on the market today. And it is in the range of the average buyer. In my opinion it is tomorrows concept car available today. Well not exactly available today because the waiting list is quite long. It should be ordered with the Smart Key System and the Navigation System all in the same optional package. Although the response is slightly sluggish at first you will easily adapt to it. It is comfortable and roomy inside and holds four very well with extra room for a fifth. After a month I have been averaging 45 mpg.

Previously I owned a 1997 RAV4. In March of 2004, I traded it in for a new 2004 RAV4. The vehicle was fantastic! Great color (blue), styling, sunroof, etc.. I was getting concerned as the gas prices rocketed and at 20-22 mph, my RAV was getting a little expensive to drive. On a whim, I decided to look at the Prius last month (March 2005). A 20 mile test drive sold me. Within 4 hours of visiting the dealership I drove out with my fully-loaded Prius. It has been about a month now. I *do* miss the sunroof and the great color of the RAV, but the Prius has won me over. It has plently of "get up and go" when entering the interstates. It is a technical marvel! I love it!

I only had to wait a week for this vehicle, but it was the longest week of my life! I love cruising along on the highway or at low speeds through town between stop signs with my monitor showing 99 mpg! After 500 miles, the car is averaging 50.9 mpg, not bad considering all the hilly areas I have to traverse. This car has changed how I drive, though. If you have a lead foot, dont expect to get great mileage. You may have to *gasp* start letting people pass you! I love using a POWER button to start the car, and creeping up on unwitting cyclists is hilarious! I love how the car looks, it isnt like anything else out there. I cant say enough good things about my new Prius! Get one!

  • Made me enjoy driving again - 2005 Toyota Prius

The most impressive car I have owned in over 45 years of buying/driving cars. It is fun to drive, handles well, and the economy is fantastic. With all the bells and whistles, it is still very reasonably priced and lives up to all its hype.

  • I Love This Car!! - 2005 Toyota Prius

I purchased my new Prius 2 months ago and have been thrilled with it. It gets 51 mpg on the highway and 43-45 mpg in the city. The car accelerates smoothly and quickly with no difficulty on the freeway. The smart key is great, I never have to search for the key in my purse. I just leave it in the bottom of my purse, put my hand on the door handle and the door unlocks. Likewise, the car starts by pressing a start button (once again, the key stays in my purse which is in the car) - so convenient. Theres a surprising amount of room - no complaints from my kids in the back seat. I havent had any mechanical problems. The car works runs like a dream.

  • Loved it enough to buy another Prius! - 2005 Toyota Prius

I purchased a used 2005 Prius 2 years ago ($8500) with 81K miles. It now has 120K miles & I just traded it in (got $4,250 for the trade) for a 2010 Prius ($14,900). The hybrid battery was replaced by the last owner under warranty at 79K. The A/C compressor broke last year, the evaporator broke this year. I am just writing it off as a fluke though, & bought another Prius because I loved it so much & expect Toyota to only get better with this design. I could get 64mpg with fuel efficient tires & if I was trying, but averaged 50mpg with cheap tires and when I wasnt trying. I loved the luxury features in an affordable car & loved the hatchback style that I could fit anything in.

I have owned my Prius for a year. My mileage is satisfactory(41 to 49mpg) and would probably be better if I drove slower however, nothing was mentioned about that when I purchased and was told the milage could be as igh as 60mpg. I dont like the dashboard too much. Id prefer the dashboard that I had in my Camry. The green electronic lighting reflects in the winshield at night which makes night driving more difficult. The info available is nice but... not necessary and just a come-on to those who are looking for "pizazz". Most Prius drivers, especially myself, are interested in the practical aspect of it, both ecologically and economically. The "icing on the cake" is unnecessary.
