This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

  • Better than Expected - 2004 Toyota Highlander

Have had this car for about a month now and I love it. Was driving a Volvo and got sick of the repair bills, so Im looking forward to Toyotas famous reliability. The ride is exceptional and it handles far better than you would think a 5300 pound vehicle would.

Shifting from low speed to high speed. Trans needs to be changed. Slow from down to up shifting if you need the power fast forget it. Third row seating ok for kids not adults. To small on the seating. Dealer installed tires need to be better. Good ride, but you will replace them fast

  • Happy with a few issues - 2004 Toyota Highlander

85k miles and going very strong. Love how easy it is to park and handle. Gets 23 mpg on highway - not bad. No serious issues. This is my 5th straight Toyota (Camry, Avalon, Highlander) Issues include: original tires lasted 28k miles; transmission slow to shift/hesitates a second or so at times which is annoying; some hunting in 3rd gear at lower (30-40 mph) speeds so I take it out of OD when in town; Loud thumping when only one rear window is down and driving at highway speeds - due to air turbulence - so open two windows at a time - one on each side.

Purchased in Southeast Toyota region. Southeast Toyota leather installation is poor with many wrinkles and little or no padding, recommend getting the factory installed leather. There is a drivetrain vibration feeding into the steering wheel. We drove 3 Highlanders and noticed the vibration to some extent in each.My 1994 Camry with 175,000 miles has less feedback into the steering. There is limited tire selection for the 17" wheels, either the Goodyear Infinity or Michelin LX4. Was forced to take the sunroof since Southeast Toyota delivers with all Limited Highlanders.Very disappointed with this Toyota especially in light of the high cost.

I have only had the vehicle for 2 weeks. I commute between Dallas and Houston. I like the comfortable seats and the great speaker system. Mileage has been about 21MPG on the interstate.

air leaks around window switches and map pockets, moon roof sw doesnt seem to function as discribed in owners manual. Trouble finding closed position. Steering tilt adjustment could be lower by 1 inch for long legs. Heater coil could be larger.

The highlander offers a smooth ride. It drives like a car and feel extremely comfortable. I like the relative small size and easy handling. It fits well in my garage and feels lighter than any minivan alternative.

  • Love it - 2004 Toyota Highlander

In the whole SUV I have only a few complaints. Still a very nice rig and we love it. We have no regrets buying a highlander rather than a Honda Pilot. Here are our only complaints. 1.The sunroof needs an indicator to show when it is closed. You have to use wind noise to be sure its closed all the way; not easy if you are parked. 2. The driver/front seat cupholder is poorly designed. When you put a drink in the holder a hard springloaded lip holds it in place. The first time I put a soda can in the holder, the lip grabbed the can and soda splashed all over. A piece of rubber would be better than the rigid lip.
