This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

It does all things well - carries our canoe, or our bikes, Ive even laid down the back seat & slept in it. Fun to drive, comfortable, great reaction. Love this Toyota!

  • SIMPLY THE BEST - 2004 Toyota Highlander

ONE OF THE BEST CARS I HAVE EVER OWNED. THE RIDE IS EXCELLENT, NICE SIZE, HANDLES WELL AND RELIABILITY IS GREAT. IT IS WELL DESIGNED, EVERYTHING IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE. JUST ALL AROUND ITS A GREAT CAR, ITS AN SUV BUT IT RIDES LIKE A CAR. ITS BIG BUT NOT TOO BIG. ITS NICE LOOKING AND ITS A TOYOTA. I HAD A RAV4 BEFORE THIS AND WANTED SOMETHING JUST A LITTLE BIGGER AND THIS IS PERFECT. I HAD A MINOR PROBLEM WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT BUT THAT IS IT. WHEN I TRADE IN ILL DEFINITELY GET ANOTHER HIGHLANDER.

  • I love my Highlander! - 2004 Toyota Highlander

I usually own my vehicles for a minimum of 8 years and I expect this one to go even longer. Not just because of the quality, its a family friendly but also mom-friendly car. I love it. Plenty of horsepower to out maneuvre slow pokes on the road and still feel safe. It also looks great. The console was designed with a layout that does not require me to look to change channels, volume. Its 100% intuitive. All in all, GREAT purchase and not one second of buyers regret.

Very comfortable and enjoyable to drive, mileage is 19 to 24 around town and 29 plus on the highway. Handles great on the Interstate and Forest Service roads. Only complaint is difficult to read odometer and clock in daylight.

  • Great SUV - 2004 Toyota Highlander

After looking at many cute utes and mid-size SUVs, my wife and I settled for the Highlander. After driving a 1992 Subaru Legacy we feel like we are driving a great handling and powerful SUV. I am very pleased with the overall appearance and driveablility. The only drawback is a slight hesitation when accelerating to merge into traffic. I found if I dont punch down on the accelerator, but give a more gradual throttle, the hesitation is minimal. Even though we bought this Highlander used, it comes highly recommended. Any vehicle that can stand the heavy usage that comes with a daily rental and still feel very solid is well designed and solidly put together.

  • Drive like a car - 2004 Toyota Highlander

It has been 3 weeks since I owned it. Like it like it like it! Pervously owned a Collora with 200,000 miles on it. One of the reason why I went back to choose a Toyota again (traded in). Since it is Camry based SUV, it really drive like a car. I chose 4x2 because it came with VSC (vehicle Stability Control) and snow traction control. Great for people who do not do much off- road driving.

  • We had our Highlander for a month. - 2004 Toyota Highlander

My wife and I have had this SUV for a little over a month and are very happy with it. The 4 cylinder engine does not feel underpowered and should be fine for almost all circumstances. It does not strain to pass cars on the highway. So far it handles well in the rain, has more than enough room for lugging things around and the vsc/abs are very good. The view from the cabin is great with no blind spots. I would highly recomend this SUV to anyone. Dont open the rear windows only, it produces a helicopter noise effect that can be shocking and LOUD! Bottom line, I cant wait to drive it again.

  • My Highlander - 2004 Toyota Highlander

My Highlander is the 3rd Toyota I have owned in twenty years. I love Toyotas reliablity. I very much like driving this car, the only disappointing thing is that I cannot ride with the window down because the car has a warble type hum that bothers my ears.
