This Year's Model Updates:

Based on the same platform as the Lexus RX 300, Toyota's new Highlander SUV represents the best blend of a station wagon, a minivan and a sport utility available on the market today. Available only with a V6 and an automatic transmission driving power to the front or all the wheels, Highlander will be sold in one trim level with a Limited package listed on the option sheet.

Pros:
  • Roomy interior, car-like ride and handling, spunky V6 engine, predicted reliability.

Has a nice style to it. Rides smoothly for an SUV. We are amazed at the performance of this four cylinder engine. When driving in the Colorado rockies, if you take it out of overdrive, it climbs as well as any larger engine.

  • BEST CAR EVER!! - 2001 Toyota Highlander

I purchased this car two weeks ago and i just love it. Im 18 years old and Ive wanted this car since I was about 12 when it came out. I love it. I take the car out every chance that I have. I bought it because I need to haul my things to and from school so it made sense to buy something that could hold all my stuff. I have the leather package because the light colored cloth seats are unbearable to dirt. I can agree with some of the other reviews that say the wind noise is unbearable, but I still love my Highlander, and the cup holders are in a weird place. The MPG reader doesnt seem to change from 16.5 miles per gallon. Maybe I need to reset it.

  • Why no power passenger seat? - 2001 Toyota Highlander

I got this car as a dealer demo, so it is loaded with pretty much all options. The car runs and handles well. It is quiet, well-appointed, and reliable. Typical Toyota. The only complaint that I have is that no power passenger-side seat was available; cmon, Toyota! This is a 30K car! Acceleration is brisk, handling is very good, especially given its high stance. It basically drives like a 4WD Avalon.

I enjoy the size and comfort of my highlander. BUT the thing I hate, no rear air. I have one child and another on the way not to mention we live in Texas. My child roasts in the back seat because the air isnt hitting her. Would it be that hard to put a vent in the back? I also am bothered by the noise when one window opens, intense pressure on your ears.

Have driven since August 2001....have received numerous compliments on the styling and color of my 2WD 6cylinder Highlander....great handling and acceleration to go with decent gas mileage (19-24 mpg)....Wonderful visibility and elevated road view...The cabin is roomy and comfortable...There is an annoying wind pressure noise that occurs when only the back windows are open...vented rear window panels would eliminate this...good pricing (650 over invoice) for a great vehicle!

Had driven Accords since 85, but was tired of being the lowest riding thing on the road! Tried many SUVs but like the handling of the Highlander better than most and now I can see over bridge railings, etc. Avgs. about 22mpg w/2WD V6. Wish that were a little better with recent gas prices, but havent ever checked it on just highway driving. Bought a used 2001 w/27,000 miles about 6 months ago and except for the aforementioned goofy cup holders and lack of console, I love it. Im not a small driver, and it is more comfortable than most any vehicle Ive driven. Plenty of room in the back seat even with my drivers seat all the way back.

After 41/2 years, we love the Highlander. Mileage shows about 21 in town and 24 on the road. Stability control helps in ice and snow. Quality of materials and construction are outstanding. Overall, a real winner.

My 2001 Highlander is one year old this month. I cant think of any complaints other than the minor problem of the lousy cup holder placement for driver, drivers seat doesnt go back far enough, and the console area is wasted when the cup holder is in use, therefore my purse has to go in the back seat if the passenger seat is occupied. Oh, gas mileage could be a bit better in city. I really love the ride, look, and the fact that I have not had to return to the dealer for any problems, other than oil change. Highly reconmend the vehicle.
